OUR STORY - Shout Outs!
WCS Weekly Highlights - Nov. 11-15, 2019
Soft Skills Prepare Students for Careers
The Wilson Education Partnership (WEP) recently hosted Coffee with the Superintendent where industry leaders who partner with WEP on Career Connections met with Dr. Mills to talk about ways to connect students to careers. One important dynamic discussed was the need for students to have soft skills - teamwork, strong verbal communication, adaptability, problem solving, eye contact, a firm handshake and a good work ethic. Shout Out! to Toisnot MS Social Studies Teacher Bob Iannucci who ties soft skills into his curriculum each day. He shakes hands with students as they enter his classroom, encourages eye contact, asks students to stand when they answer a question, requires them to compliment each other and shake hands before starting partner or group work and assigns presentations so the students practice their communication skills in front of the class.

"Shout Out! to Kari McCollough, Forest Hills MS Exceptional Children's Teacher, for creating a science lab for her students. The lab allows them to explore their creativity and bring classroom topics to life. They recently had fun weighing, measuring and examining pumpkins. Her students have enjoyed participating in new hands-on activities!" - From Tiphanie Wells, Forest Hills EC Teacher

Shout Outs!
- Shout Out! to eighth-graders at Speight MS who collected items such as toys and school supplies for Operation Christmas Child, a project sponsored by the Samaritan's Purse. The students used their marketing skills to promote the project throughout the school, and they collected more than 560 items that will be sent to children all over the world!
- "I would like to thank Principal Liz Jenkins for the tour of Jones ES. She took time out of her busy schedule to be my personal tour guide. We toured the NC Pre-K classrooms, the Exceptional Children's classrooms, Jeremy Kirby's fifth-grade science class and many other classes. I proudly observed students at Jones learning, creating and inspiring!" - From Board of Education Member Debora Powell
- The Administration at Elm City MS would like to thank Sara Daniels, Exceptional Children's Coordinator, for going above and beyond. Ms. Daniels is dependable and always willing to help out when needed, such as leading IEP meetings when the principal cannot attend. She is always supportive and a great asset to the Elm City team!

- On Nov. 19 at 8 p.m., UNC-TV Public Media North Carolina will air a special documentary Resilience: The Biology of Stress & the Science of Hope as part of Resilience Week - a statewide initiative to build awareness of childhood trauma, prevention and resilience. The documentary chronicles the impact of toxic stress on children’s well-being and explores strategies used by educators, therapists, pediatricians and communities to disrupt cycles of violence and trauma. Many children exhibit negative behaviors because of stress or trauma they have experienced in their lives. Adults who work with children need to be aware of how to support these children. You can learn more about Resilience Week here.
