BMES Family Weekly Update
Week of January 10-14, 2022
Message from Principal Wagner
January 9, 2022
This week as we returned from winter break, we experienced the majority of families having an impact of COVID in their home. Whether it is knowing someone with COVID or being exposed, please stay safe. Please remember our goal is to ensure all students will be able to continue to participate in in-person instruction. In order to do this, please keep your children home if they are sick, someone in the home is being tested for COVID, or if a recent exposure occurred.
Dr. Shandor shared last week that some YCSD schools, classes, and even students are having to pivot to virtual learning due to the impact on staffing and student attendance. We at Bethel Manor want to try to remain as safe and healthy as possible. In order to do that, we need your support to stay home if someone in the home is ill. Thank you for understanding!
Next Monday, all schools will be closed in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Enjoy the day honoring one of the greatest individuals in our history!
Please see this new format for our weekly updates. This will allow parents to access information for reference.
Have a great evening,
Mrs. Wagner

Free Tutoring
As part of the division's efforts to address unfinished learning in accordance with the ARP Act ESSER III funds, the York County School Division has partnered with FEV Tutor to provide students in grades 3-12 with free, 1:1 online tutoring. In addition to supporting coursework and homework in core subjects such as math, English/Language Arts, science and social studies, FEV Tutor offers support for Advanced Placement (AP) and International Baccalaureate (IB) courses.
Along with the on-demand support, FEV Tutor also offers weekly sessions between 7 and 10 p.m., Monday through Friday, and on weekends so families can select the times that work best for their schedule. To get started with e-tutoring, students should log in to Clever and locate the FEV Tutor app icon to get started. They can then schedule sessions and access live help at any time of the day.
While all support is live and personalized to each student's classes and needs, the program does not involve device cameras or microphones - instead all interactions involve a whiteboard and chat feature. Students will be able to share their screens and upload documents to review with tutors, and tutors only have access to student work provided by the individual student. Once a student is signed up for weekly sessions, FEV Tutor may periodically email families and students (aged 13 and older).

COVID Updates
COVID Update
We received notice that 4 members of the Bethel Manor community tested positive for COVID-19 over the last week after being in the school building. This information is updated daily on the division’s COVID-19 Dashboard. Staff members have notified all individuals who were identified as close contacts, as defined by the Virginia Department of Health, to follow quarantine protocols. If you have not been contacted personally, your children were not considered close contacts. Information regarding contact tracing and quarantine requirements is available in the division’s Safe Return Plan.
All families are asked to continue conducting the Daily Health Screening each morning and to keep children home when they are sick, until they are fever free for 24 hours without the use of fever-reducing medication. If you have questions regarding the division’s COVID-19 response plans, please contact Chrissy Wagner, Principal at (757) 867-7439.
Updated Visitor Policy
Due to the current conditions in our community with COVID numbers and transmission, we will no longer be allowing parents to come into the main office unless you have a prearranged appointment. All parents/guardians will be expected to wait outside if they are picking up their child or dropping off materials, effective immediately.

Upcoming Absence
Attendance Reminders
When your child is absent, notification in writing is required to excuse the absence. Please send an excuse note in the form of an email to bmeattendance@ycsd.york.va.us AND the classroom teacher indicating the reason for the absence. A list of excusable absences can be found in the YCSD Student Handbook & Conduct Code on page 1 (page 12 of document).
When a student is absent and school officials do not receive a note from the parent/guardian documenting the reason, this absence will be considered an unexcused absence. If a student receives five (5) unexcused absences, an attendance contract will be required. A letter will be mailed and a phone call from school administration will be made to notify parents when this need arises.
If a student accumulates ten (10) or more total absences, excused or unexcused, official documentation from a doctor or court to excuse any additional absences will be required. A letter from school administration will be mailed to notify parents when this occurs.
