Homework Helps!

Our First Parent Academy for this year focused on the School and Community Resources and Homework Helps! As our students are now entering our third month of school and the second nine weeks marking period, having a good homework routine at home and knowing where to get support when needed is vital.

Pelham City School has developed a hand out to give support and assistance to basically support parents navigating homework help. The document is available to download below this article.

We want to share this guide which will help parents access Parent Portal and all the instructional resources/software our school already owns or can access for free. The Parent Portal is also where the SLDS or State Longitude Data System can be accessed, which offers resources for each grade level and for each standard in each content area. Check out the Communities in Schools in Georgia (CISGA)website which is loaded with helpful resources and has also created the Parent Homework Checklist, which you can access below with the other resources shown. Educational Websites for Families and Educational APPs for Families are resources brought to us by the GADOE. All of these informational guides and more are also accessible on this PCS Parent and Family Engagement hot link.

Another aspect of making homework time effective and fun is having a set place that students can claim as their study area, with their materials and quiet space that lends itself to uninterrupted studying! Check out a few ideas posted on Pinterest recently on the Homework Station Hints button below.

"Reading is the Key to Success!" We have heard this quote but how many of us stop to think of the ways reading is the key to success in every content area, in the work place and in every area of our lives. I realized early on with my first two children, who were a little slower to develop strong reading skills how much being a early reader could effect the other subjects they were learning. A teacher explained to me then that children mature in different speeds and even with reading skills some take a little longer to put it all together and grasp the sounds and letters and especially comprehension. I also learned that with some of my children, their stronger language skills helped them read fluently but not with great comprehension capacity. How can we help as parents and adults? We must be engaged with reading ourselves that is one of the best ways to help our children read. The Reading Rockets website shares 11 Ways Parents Can Help Their Children Read.

If you as a parent or care giver are a struggling reader yourself or know someone who is, stop by our Parent Involvement Resource Center (see hours of operation below) and discover what resources we have for adult literacy and how we might point you in direction for help. If you are someone who needs to get their GED or General Education Development Test please check out the information provided about free GED classes in our local area by Southern Regional.

Your Input Needed!

Pelham City School is a Title 1 school which means we are awarded funding each year to help our students in poverty have similar academic experiences and opportunities with other student across our nation in other more affluent communities.

This funding helps "level the playing field" so to speak for successful academic student outcomes. As a part of the requirements for the continuation of our funding we are required to obtain parent input into our Parent and Family Engagement Program. In order to give as many opportunities as possible for parents and community input, we are imbedding a new Parent & Community Input Form in this newsletter. The survey below is brief but very helpful in our planning and implementing effective parent activities and strategies. Please take a moment to complete the survey and to thank you for your time parents that submit surveys this month will be entered in a drawing for a Wal-Mart Gift Card!
