The Seahawk Scoop

February 15, 2021

Dear Beach Middle Families,

I hope everyone enjoyed the long weekend. I apologize for this week's newsletter being late. I was a little under the weather for the past two days.

We are preparing to welcome our F2F 7th and 8th grade students next week. Links to informational presentations will be sent out via AlertNow on Friday. Tonight parents can expect an AlertNow informing/reminding of their child's option. We do have a waiting list of students wishing to change to F2F. We will continue working to accommodate those requests. If your child is an Option 1 student and you are intending to change them to Option 2, please notify us as soon as possible so that we may use the seat for another child.

As you may know, we have a new system in VBCPS for Term Two to help monitor the implementation of mitigation strategies. Each school will be visited by Safety Assessment Teams. We had our first visit this past week and it was a resounding success. The team highlighted several areas- our distance markers throughout the building that provides a visual for students, QR codes for classroom visitors, seating charts for all classrooms were readily available, and our custodial teams quickly moving into areas for cleaning when a group of students leave. Safety of our staff and students is our top priority. Thank you for working with your child to reinforce the importance of the mitigations. The students have done a phenomenal job.

I hope all of you have a great week. Do not hesitate to reach out if we can assist in any way. As always, thank you for the support of our staff and students. It means the world!

COVID Exposure Reminders

As we begin to transition back to in person learning, it is very important that we be informed of any possible exposure for our students and staff. If anyone in your home tests positive for COVID-19, or exhibits symptoms, please contact our school nurse, Ann James, or me, as soon as possible. It is vital to our return efforts that we have accurate information so that appropriate quarantine protocols are followed. The Self-Screening tool that all staff, students, and visitors should use before entering the school is below. Thank you very much for helping us keep our VBMS community safe and healthy.

PTA Reflections Winners

I want to recognize our students who participated in the PTA Reflections Program. This year's theme was I Matter Because.

The following students placed in the citywide contest:

Stella B.- Award of Excellence in the Visual Arts Category and Merit Award in the Photography Category

Marlee B.- Merit Award in the Dance Choreography Category

Mia G.- Outstanding Interpretation in the Film Production Category

Lilah F.- Outstanding Interpretation in the Music Composition Category

And a special congratulations to Lilah F.- who earned first place in the Tidewater District judging. Lilah's entry will advance to the state competition.

We are so proud of all of our students who participated.

PTA President Needed

Our wonderful PTA Board is looking for several positions for next year- most importantly, they are seeking someone to take on the President's role. If you are interested in learning more, please reach out to Kim Votava-White at kvot2@yahoo.com.

2021 Volunteer of the Year

Congratulations to Ms. Kim Votava-White for being selected as our 2021 Volunteer of the Year. Ms. White has been instrumental in keeping our PTA efforts going strong in this strange year of COVID. When we had an abrupt vacancy in the President’s position, she jumped in without hesitation. It should be noted that although she has a son who will hopefully be playing baseball for us in the spring– he attends ODS, her other children have matriculated to high school. We are thankful for the hard work for our entire PTA Board, but Ms. White deserves special recognition. Thank you Kim!
