West Point El. Parent Update
Week of February 19, 2024
Dear West Point Families,
We hope you are enjoying the long Presidents Day weekend with your family. We are entering a busy season, so please be sure to check the calendar each week for updates.
We are also beginning to look towards next year. This Wednesday our Community Council is meeting to discuss ideas for next year's Teacher Student Success Plan (TSSP). We have also had questions about kindergarten registration. As soon as we know how the new school is going to set up their kindergarten registration, we will send out information for both of our schools. We expect to get information from them soon.
Here are three important things to know for the coming week.
- Bus Driver Appreciation Week is this week. If your student rides the bus, we hope you and your student will consider taking time to write a note of appreciation to their bus driver. It is a difficult job!
- Read Across America will be the last week of February, and our PTA has planned a lot of fun activities to encourage and celebrate reading. They need many volunteers to make this happen. Please take a look at the link and see if there is something you can do to help. Thank you!

Game of the Week
This week Mrs. Wallace will be teaching students how to play Giants, Wizards, and Elves. This is a fun game that encourages cooperation and group decision making. We hope you will encourage your students to check it out!
February School Missions
Please encourage your students to complete our reading challenge this month. We have already had a few students turn in their completed boards! Our goal is to help students get in the habit of reading at least 20 minutes every day. Thank you for your support!
Our PTA Mission is to give someone a compliment, which goes hand in hand with our Bonus Friendship Edition! Be sure to ask your students about their kindness missions each week.
RUSH to School Attendance Drawing
We would like to thank Coleman Orthodontics for sponsoring their RUSH to SCHOOL attendance contest again this year. Each student who has no tardies or absences for 3rd term will have their name put in a drawing. Three names will be drawn. Each winner will receive a $50 gift card to RUSH, and their classmates will each receive a free activity at RUSH.

District Opportunities
Message about Davis School District's DEEP Progam
Dear Parents,
My name is Kristi Burgess and I am the new Davis Enhanced Education Programs (DEEP) Supervisor. Our full-time gifted and talented classes which were formerly called PAL and Spectrum are now called DEEP Magnet classes. In our DEEP magnet, identified gifted and talented students are grouped together full-time with a gifted and talented endorsed teacher and offered a specialized, rigorous curriculum geared toward advanced learners.
I wanted to make you aware that our DEEP Magnet classes will be transitioning from Lakeside Elementary to Clinton Elementary next year. We are excited to be gradually expanding our DEEP classes to include the younger grades at Clinton Elementary so that by 2026-27, DEEP 1-6 will be offered at that location. The transition will occur as outlined in the chart below.
We would like to invite any 2nd-5th grade students who are interested in the DEEP magnet program to consider registering to take the Cognitive Abilities (CogAT) test, which is used as part of our identification process. We will be offering the CogAT test at Lakeside Elementary on Tuesday, February 27 during the school day and at Clinton Elementary on Wednesday, February 28 during the school day. Parents will be responsible for providing transportation to the testing if it is not at your boundary school.
If you would like to register for your child to be tested for DEEP, please fill out the DEEP Testing application on our website, which is linked below.
**Please indicate in the Comments if you would like your child to take the test at Lakeside Elementary on Tuesday, February 27 or Clinton Elementary on Wednesday, February 28.**
DEEP - Davis Enhanced Education Programs - Davis School District
We especially encourage any interested students who are currently in 2nd and 3rd grades to test since our new classes at Clinton will have space for many new DEEP students.
The testing dates at Lakeside and Clinton are quickly approaching, so we encourage anyone who is interested to apply as soon as possible. My assistant, Sharon Gold, will then reach out to parents with more information, including specific testing times.
If you have any questions regarding testing, please reach out to Sharon Gold at sgold@dsdmail.net.
Thank you!
Kristi Burgess
