The Cloud Connection
December 2, 2013
Math: This week we'll wrap up our study of multiplication as we continue to practice the strategies we've learned. We'll have an end of the chapter test on Friday. Homework: Mon. pg. 309-310, Tues. Prob. Solving packet due Thursday.
Reading: We'll finish up our Literature Groups reading Dick King-Smith books in the next couple of days. After that we'll launch into our simple machine informational texts. Students will be working in groups with this series of books that explain how we use machines in our daily lives.
Language: This week is a vocabulary week. Our vocab words are: gon, poly, bi and super/supra. A study guide went home Monday so students can prepare for the test on Friday. We'll also have one more spelling bee on Tues. to narrow down our top contestants for the school-wide bee Dec. 13. We will finish up the mini-lessons for our informational books we're writing this week so students can work on composing final drafts next week.
Science: We are beginning a unit on Motion and Forces that will help us understand Simple Machines. This week we'll learn about Newton's three laws and conduct some experiments that will help us to understand how those laws work.
Other items: I had glowing reports from the class about their behavior during my absence. I am very proud of them and you should be too!
Remember that compliment sheets are due tomorrow, Dec. 3. I need every student to think of a positive compliment about each of their classmates. The compliments need to be written in nice handwriting between the lines on their form and they need to address behaviors/attitudes rather than physical attributes. The more specific they can be the better. Thank you for helping with this.
I have shared the process with students for making Scrapbooks for their next book report. These are due Dec. 12. I suggest that students read their book with a few sticky notes so they can mark possible scrapbook entry pages as they read. See the details at the bottom of this page. If students need paper they are welcome to take the paper they need from school for this project.
Please continue to collect box tops for us as there is another drive taking place in Feb.
I hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving and enjoyed some extended time with your family. Please make sure you've marked your calendars for our Christmas Program, Dec. 10th at 6:30 at Homer High.
Music Notes
Parents,
We are getting remarkably close to our WHE Christmas Concert. Your students have been working so hard to prepare some great entertainment for you again this year.
This year we have several combine group performances including 3rd and 4th grade groups, a combine 5th grade piece, a combine 6th grade piece and a large piece involving all 5th and 6th grade students. In addition to our regular music classes performing, our 5th and 6th grade bands will be performing several pieces as well.
After the students are finished sharing their songs with you, we will invite you to sing along to some great traditional Christmas Carols.
As we approach the concert please talk to your student(s) about proper concert attire. I would like all students to dress in the nicest clothes possible. No holes or stained clothing please. Holiday colors would be best.
This is a night that is sure to get you in the mood for the holidays! We hope that you will join us.
December 10th @ 6:30 pm @ HHS
(Students need to arrive around 6:15 pm or earlier)
Sincerely,
Mrs. Moore
Scrapbook Directions for Dec. 12 Book Report
Scrapbook Book Report
- You will need to select a realistic fiction or historical fiction book. The book needs to be in the neighborhood of 100 pages unless you have discussed this with me. Choose a main character from your book.
- As you read the book look for events that are important to the story and to the main character. When you find an event you might want to use put a sticky note in the book with the page number written on it.
- When you have finished reading the book choose five of the events that you thought were important.
- Choose five objects (one to represent each of the events you’ve chosen) to create your scrapbook.
- Put one object on each page. On lined paper write the page number that relates to the object, the approx. date and location that relates to the event and at least three sentences that explain the importance of the object to your character.
- Continue this for all of the objects and put the pages of your character’s scrapbook in the same order that they occurred in the story.
- Make a cover page with your character’s name on it. Then make a title page that includes the name of the book, the author’s name, your name and the date.
- Bind your scrapbook and turn it in, no later than Dec. 12.
