Union Weekly Staff Update
Volume 20- January 10, 2015
Our Mission
A Message from Jen
A few brief updates for the upcoming week...
The fine ZCS Maintenance Crew was in full force at Union last week, preparing us for an upcoming fire inspection (likely late this week or next). Erin and I have spoken with many of you if there were specific concerns that we needed to address in your classroom. We will talk more about this at our staff meeting on Tuesday morning. Also on the agenda for Tuesday morning, we will meet with our new special education department leadership, Paula Williams and Christina Moore.
Tuesday during the school day, our top spellers will shine at our annual third and fourth grade spelling bee. Thank you, Megan, for once again coordinating this effort.
Mid-week, our Union University book study will meet after school to discuss PBL in the Elementary Grades. All are welcome, even if you did not read the text and just want to hear more. I am looking forward to our discussion and time together. Also on Wednesday, our PTO will have an evening meeting where they are welcoming a guest speaker, mental health counselor Deb Cruser. Ms. Cruser will be doing a 45 minute workshop on mindfulness. There is a lot of buzz around this topic right now, so I have linked a few articles on the topic in case you are interested in learning more.
On Thursday, our office will be shorthanded, as both Erin and I will be out of the building. Trish, Sharon, and Erin will be presenting at the state STEM conference at Purdue University about our experiences with PBL focused on “making our school more nature friendly.” We are so proud of you! Breanne Tisch and I will be over at the ESC working through the fourth grade standards based report cards. Maggie will be on site, but please do not hesitate to call or text me if needed.
We will close out the week to the tune of a three day weekend. Have a great week, all!

2 Hour Delay Schedule
Students arrive at 10:50. There are no morning announcements and we do not have recess. Specials begin at 11:00. Kindergarten will release at 2:30 as normal.
Just a reminder that preschool does not delay since it is fee based and parents drive them to school. Besides BAC traffic, there will be preschool traffic between 9:05-9:25 at the preschool entrances.
Lunch times are as follows:
- 11:30-12:00 First Grade and Kindergarten (Williams/Cravens/Fremion) in café
- 12:05-12:35 2nd Grade and Kindergarten (Dunn/Sorgen) in café & Preschool in project room
- 12:45-1:15 Third and Fourth Grade
- Clark and Beiermann will need to eat in the project room. An additional adult will supervise this group in the project room. We will also set up additional tables in the café as needed. There will not be any assigned seats this day.
Goodwill Clothing Drive
Cleaning your closet and planning to make a visit to Goodwill sometime this month?
Please read this!
Be sure to tell the attendant to count your clothing donation for the Zionsville Educational Services Center. For every 13-gallon bag of clothing donated, the ESC will receive a $5 Goodwill clothing voucher to distribute to families in need, so that they can shop for free. Vouchers earned will go to ZCS guidance departments.
Reminder: This is for clothing donations only. You can donate other items, but only the clothing will count toward our total.
Please feel free to pass this along to family and friends! You can take clothing to ANY Goodwill and tell them it is for the Zionsville Educational Services Center.
Ready, set…. clean your closet!
