Home of Fantastic First Graders!
WEEK OF DECEMBER 8-12
Here's what we are up to this week...
Reader's Workshop
We will review the reading strategies we have learned so far this year. In our guided reading groups, we will focus on and identify the strategies that work best for us. We will also learn a new strategy, Tryin' Lion. He reminds us to keep trying until we figure out the word. This means using all of the strategies including our own word knowledge.
We will also have our own classroom "Blizzard of 100 Books" reading challenge. Our goal is to read 100 books (or more) as a class during the month of December. Students will read their books during Daily 5 and record the story elements. Then we can fill out a snowflake for the book.

Writer's Workshop
In writing, we will write opinion pieces using the prompt, "If I were a snowman at night..." This prompt goes with the story Snowmen at Night by Caralyn Buehner. It will be interesting to see what adventures each snowman will have while the world is asleep! We will use our checklists and knowledge of mechanics to edit and publish our pieces.

Math
We will be wrapping up Unit 5 on addition. That means that we will have the unit assessment this week. When we take the assessment, there will be no math homework that evening. The students deserve a little break after demonstrating what they have learned!

WE HAVE BIG NEWS!!!
Within the next few weeks, our school is making a few changes to classroom locations. Our classroom was selected to move a few doors down to Room 2, which is next to the preschool classroom. These changes will help our school best meet the needs of all students. Our desks and classroom furniture will be moved after school on December 22nd, which means we should be in our new room on December 23rd, right before vacation.
