Reading
We have been focusing on text structures and will continue to practice after the Thanksgiving break. After introducing the topic, students used task cards with short informative stories, to practice the skill. The stories were high interest topics and the kids loved reading them and identifying what structure type was used. We will extend our learning after the break and begin to compare and contrast different text features. We will also begin to analyze text more closely and practice a new close reading strategy. Ask your kiddo what the five text structure types are!

Math
In December, the students will be continuing with fractions and moving on to Patterns, and then Decimals.
We just completed the Case of the Tricky Triplets in our math mysteries. This mystery focused on the skill of adding and subtracting with decimals as well as fractions. Ask your child if they were able to solve the mystery!
Junior Achievement Day
Social Studies
We just completed chapter 9 and are moving into chapter 10 right after a mini unit on democracy and the Bill of Rights. Ask your fifth grader to see his/her interactive notebook and check out all the work they did regarding the American Revolution. Once the Social Studies curriculum is finished, we will move into the Science curriculum, Earth Science.
Writing and Grammar
Students were busy with informative writing in the month of November. After completing a longer piece in class, they completed a second multi-paragraph essay for the district writing assessment. Students will be applying what they know about our five domains (focus, content, organization, style, conventions), as we move in to opinion writing in December. Learning to support their opinions with strong facts and details will be our next area of focus.

"No Missed Assignments" Celebration
Students with no missed assignments for the trimester were invited to watch National Treasure as a reward for all of their hard work so far this year. The content of this movie follows our current social studies content and the students enjoyed making connections from the movie to real life historic events.
