Homework
Nightly Reading
Your child will have the opportunity to bring home a book bag from school each night. This book bag will contain several books that are at your child’s independent reading level and/or interest them. I ask that you encourage your child to read from this bag each night. However, your child is not expected to finish reading all of the books in the bag. The bag and books must be returned to school each day. These are the same books that your child is reading at school during independent reading time, so it is absolutely vital that he/she brings the bag back to school every morning.
The book bag will also contain a reading log that your child will be using to document his/her reading both at home and school. There is no requirement about how much time should be spent reading at home or how many pages should be read.Monthly Book Report
Words Their Way
Each Monday children will receive their new list of words. Each day children will spend a 20 minute block working on their spelling words through a variety of engaging activities.
Each Friday children will be assessed on their current list. If your child is not successful on their spelling test Friday, they will have a chance to continue to work on those words for mastery before moving on.
I am happy to share your child's individual assessment results during October's Parent-Teacher Conferences.
Sight Words
Please work on sight words nightly. When your child has mastered their list please write a note in their agenda and I will assess them. Upon completion of their current list they will receive a new list. I will provide sight words up to a 5th grade level, as your child needs.
List will not come home on a routine basis but instead once your child has completed their current list and are in need of a new one.
I will highlight the sight words your child has mastered in yellow. I will draw a green box around your child's current sight words that they should work on.
Monthly Challenge
Please note this is not something your child will be graded on.
