Things to Keep In Mind
- You should not being stressing or worrying about recruitment! If you are, you're doing something wrong. It's our ultimate hope that each and every one of you finds this process and as stress- and worry-free as possible. Please contact me or your Gamma Chi's if you feel overwhelmed at any point during this experience.
- Relax and be yourself. You're already ready for recruitment, because you're ready as you are! :)
- Get involved on campus. We'd give this tip to anyone on campus, PNM or not. Besides, it's a great way to meet people and it makes for great conversation during formal recruitment in January.
- Keep up with your academics. Concentrate on learning new studying techniques for your new classes. This should always be your first priority -- because after all, you came to Vanderbilt to be a student!
- Sign up for recruitment. We highly, highly encourage you to register by October 1st to be placed into a Gamma Chi group. The absolute deadline is November 6th by 5pm and there are NO exceptions if you don't sign up in time!

Mythbusters
Don't pay attention to these common myths below! If you hear them around campus, keep these truths in mind. Don't be scared by any crazy rumors you hear -- they're circulated by misinformation and they're false!
- I have to meet as many sorority women as possible to better my chances during Spring recruitment. False, false, false!! You do not have to go out of your way to actively pursue and meet actives (aka active sorority members)! That's weird. Don't do that. Stay active in the Vanderbilt community, be nice to everyone (Greek or not, no matter what chapter if they are Greek). Make friends with people your own age -- that's what the Commons experience is all about. If you're trying to aggressively meet sorority women, you're doing it wrong: that's bizarre behavior, that's too much work, and you shouldn't be focusing on recruitment that much. Just don't. Be natural, relaxed, and focus on being a student and meeting friends.
- I'll better my chances at getting in the sorority I want if I'm rude to other sorority members. This is one of the most dangerous things you can do. If you are rude and behaving poorly during recruitment, you can be released from the process -- which means you won't get a bid from any chapter, let alone the one you think you wanted. This is not to threaten you, but to remind you: be nice to everyone. Besides, you're new here and you really don't know what other chapters are all about, despite what you hear from other people. Just because someone tells you XYZ sorority is "bad" or "lame" does not mean that's true! They don't know anything about that chapter unless they're in it. You need to try the chapter out for yourself to really know what they're about.
- Once I join a sorority, I'll inevitably go through some sort of hazing. Nooooooooo! Stop that rumor in its tracks right now! There is no hazing that goes on in any sorority at Vanderbilt. This is not just a PR move or nice lie so you won't be afraid to join -- it really, truly doesn't happen here at VU. See our hazing policy and resources here for more info.

Gamma Chi Program
What is the Gamma Chi Program?
This program, coordinated by VU Panhellenic, functions to provide PNMs with a counselor (“Gamma Chi”) throughout the recruitment process. They will be meeting with you on a regular basis, and serve to be guides, mentors, and around-the-clock resources.
What is a Gamma Chi?
A Gamma Chi is an active member of the Panhellenic community who has disaffiliated from her chapter starting in the fall semester and ending after the completion of formal recruitment. Gamma Chis are a unique community of Panhellenic representatives and work collaboratively to ensure that recruitment is a smooth, enjoyable, and positive experience for both you and the chapters on campus.
How will Gamma Chi's help you?
Gamma Chis are a crucial component of recruitment, as they serve as the guides, mentors, and role models for incoming PNMs. Gamma Chis are there to answer any questions and address any problems you may face during the recruitment process.
Gamma Chis are passionate about helping you find your home in the Panhellenic community and are unbiased, trusted guides. When will you be assigned a Gamma Chi?
You will be assigned a Gamma Chi group later in the semester after you register online for recruitment. The groups will fill up as the semester goes along and get larger as more and more people register.

Transfer or Upperclassman Student?
As an upperclassmen or transfer student, you have 3 options in joining one of our chapters. You may participate in Upper Class Recruitment known as COB (Continuous Open Bidding), you may participate in formal recruitment (register online as usual, attend PPD, and formal recruitment in January 2016), or you can join one of our multicultural sororities (see #3).
1.) COB:
COB opportunities are limited because every chapter is not eligible or required to participate in the process. So, not every chapter will participate. After visiting Open Houses and meeting many of our active sorority women, the chapter will hold invite-only recruitment events beginning on September 8 and most chapters will send invitations to join on September 14. You may receive multiple bids during the COB process.
- From the registration meeting, you should have filled out
2.) a Release of Information Consent Card.
- Click here for info about eligibility requirements.
- Pros: informal, laid-back way to join a sorority, join earlier
- Cons: smaller pledge class, not every sorority participates, not guaranteed a bid
2.) FORMAL RECRUITMENT:
For this route, you must wait until January, after registering online. During the formal recruitment process all of our chapters are open for membership.
More info HERE.
- You may participate in both COB and formal recruitment. But if you accept a bid during COB, you cannot do formal recruitment.
- Pros: larger pledge class, all chapters participate
- Cons: delayed until January, larger time commitment, likely guaranteed a bid (if you maximize your options during ALL rounds, attend everything, and have good behavior)
3.) MORE GREAT OPTIONS:
We have two associate members, Sigma Lambda Gamma and Lambda Theta Alpha. These are multicultural sororities on campus with recruitment processes similar to NPHC. These are wonderful & unique sororities, and we highly encourage you to learn more about them and get engaged with these amazing women! They'd love to speak with you any time about what sets them apart and why you should join.
For more information contact: Sigma Lambda Gamma National Sorority, Inc. at Kevia Reeves and Emily Oviedo for Lambda Theta Alpha Latin Sorority, Inc.
