Dear Summit Families,
The start of the 2023-24 school year has been a busy one! Learning is under way at Summit and teachers have been busy getting students involved in Design Challenges, using and understanding the Design Process, and jumping into their first PBL (Project Based Learning) opportunity. You should be, if you have not already, received information about what is going on in your child's classroom. Each grade level has developed a grade level appropriate PBL to guide students through possible solutions to a specific problem.
We will also have our Multicultural Day at the beginning of October. We will share and learn about the various cultures at Summit. Students will learn about what connects us and what makes us unique. We are excited to share in this opportunity and want students to love being at Summit Road STEM Elementary and know that it is a place where All Are Welcome (read aloud)!
We will have our 3rd Annual Walk-a-thon event on Friday day, September 29, 2023. We still have a few days to go before the fundraising ends. Thank you for all you have done to help work toward reaching our goal. The fundraiser link can be found HERE on our 99Pledges Fundraiser Website.You can search for your child's name to see their donation page. If you are new to us, you may not have a dedicated page but can still donate using your classroom teachers page. Be sure to shout out your student in the comments! Once the fundraiser is complete, an official amount will be shared with families. Thank you for those who are able to join us for this fun event.
Summit has been a busy place since the beginning of school and will continue to have more exciting things happening. Stay tuned for more!

Dyslexia Screener
Dyslexia Screener Grade K-3
The Ohio Department of Education requires that Ohio districts administer a screener for learning characteristics related to dyslexia to all students between January of their kindergarten year and December of their first-grade year. This is the first year of this new requirement, therefore all students in grades K-3 will be assessed. Reynoldsburg City Schools uses Acadience, an Ohio Department of Education approved screener, to assess students. Students in grades 1-3 will be assessed in the fall. Kindergarten students will be assessed in January.
Ohio law defines dyslexia as a specific learning disability characterized by difficulty reading due to problems hearing and identifying sounds in words and learning how sounds combine to form words. Dyslexia typically results in difficulty learning letter-sound correspondences, repeating words with multiple syllables, breaking words into sounds for spelling, and blending sounds to form words for reading.
Parents/guardians will be notified of the screening results. Students identified as “at risk” will receive intervention and additional assessments to monitor their progress. Our goal is to use a screening process to provide early intervention to struggling readers, not identify or diagnose dyslexia.
Please contact your student’s teacher if you have any questions or concerns regarding the Ohio screening requirement. You can also reference the Ohio Department of Education Dyslexia Support webpage.
The Design Process at Summit
The Design Process at Summit
If you have ever heard your student talk about the Design Process, here is what they mean! We us the Design Process in everything we do at Summit and I bet you use it at work and at home too. The Design Process has five parts:
- Imagine - In this part of the process we ask: What is the problem? How will I know the problem is solved? What can I use to solve the problem?
- Plan - In this part of the process we: Choose a solution, draw a sketch or diagram, and list the materials we need!
- *Design - In this part of the process we: Follow our plan, create it, and test it out!
- *Improve - In this part of the process we: Modify or improve our design and then test it out again!
- Share - In this part of the process we: Share our results and what we learned!
*Sometimes we do steps 3 and 4 multiple times before we are ready to share our final design.
Students at Summit are asked to do many challenging things to stretch their brains. The brain is a muscle that we must exercise everyday so it can grow stronger. There is always more than one way to solve a problem and we want our students to be innovative and use their imagination and creativity as we work through the Design Process. We do not always give them the answers because if we did, their brains would not get the exercise it needs to grow.

Notice of Right To Know Teacher Qualifications
September 25, 2023
Dear Parent/Guardian:
According to federal law, schools who receive Title I, Part A funds (all RCS elementary schools) must provide the following information to parents:
Title I Parents Right To Know
You have the right to know about the teaching qualifications of your child’s classroom teacher in a school receiving Title I funds. The federal Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) requires that any school district receiving Title I funds must notify parents of each student attending any school receiving Title I funds that they may request, and the district will provide the parents on request (and in a timely manner), information regarding the professional qualifications of the student’s classroom teachers, including at a minimum, the following:
Whether the teacher has met State qualification and licensing criteria for the grade levels and subject areas in which the teacher provides instruction;
Whether the teacher is teaching under emergency or other provisional status through which State qualification or licensing criteria have been waived; and
Whether the teacher is teaching in the field of discipline of the certification of the teacher;
Whether your child is provided services by paraprofessionals and, if so, their qualifications.
In addition, parents of participating children will be provided:
Information on the level of achievement of their child(ren) on the required State academic assessments; and
Timely notice that the parent's child has been assigned, or has been taught for four or more consecutive weeks by, a teacher who does not meet applicable State certification or licensure requirements at the grade level and subject area in which the teacher has been assigned.
Currently all elementary schools in Reynoldsburg City Schools have schoolwide Title I programs.
If you have questions, please do not hesitate to contact me directly.
Sincerely,
Latasha Turner
Principal
