3:00-3:15 Read Why Land Ethic?
3:15-3:30 Discuss
3:30-3:45 Inquiry Activity: “The land ethic simply enlarges the boundaries of the community to include soils, waters, plants, and animals, or collectively: the land... In short, a land ethic changes the role of Homo sapiens from conqueror of the land-community to plain member and citizen of it. It implies respect for his fellow-members, and also respect for the community as such.”
Talking with an inter-disciplinary group, discuss the land ethic of the people, places, ideas, and activities in the unit you will be doing. What is the role of humanity regarding land: conqueror, citizen, both? How can you describe the relationship between humanity and land that is communicated by the materials and ideas in this unit?
