Message from the Superintendent
As we approach the holiday season, many families are contemplating travel and making decisions about traditional family gatherings. As a reminder, students who travel out of state to any location with a positivity rate greater than 5% (those states are listed here, and the list is constantly updated) will require a 14-day quarantine upon return. This is the preferred response of the RI Department of Health as well as what is required in our policy, as a negative test only indicates that the virus is not currently present. In the event there are families who must travel, we ask that you inform your school principal so that we can accurately record absences and communicate with staff about attendance and plans for continuity of education.
We all recognize that keeping the schools open is important for the education of our children. I am asking everyone to do their part so that we can continue to do what is necessary for the good of this entire community. I appreciate your ongoing support and partnership.
Life Changer of the Year Award
Second grade teacher Maryann Mello has also been nominated or Life Changer of the Year award. As you know Preschool teacher Jeanine Mankoff and Kindergarten teacher Tricia Abbott were nominated as well. Congratulations Mrs. Mello for this incredible nomination. To support Mrs. Mello or any nominee, anyone can submit a comment on the nominee's profile at: http://app.lifechangeroftheyear.com/nomination_list.cfm?NominationYear=2020. One may also write a letter to their local newspaper or share their profile on social media (Please use the hashtag: #LCOY so the organization can see it). These awards will be presented to an employee of a school district located in the United States at the end of the 2020-21 academic year. All nominees will receive a certificate of congratulations.
student absence protocol
Going forward, the teachers on the SIT team and I met to discuss student absences. Here is what we decided as a school:
Before School Scenario:
If your child wakes up and exhibits 1 or more possible symptoms of COVID and needs to remain home, PARENTS NEED TO EMAIL THE STAFF MEMBERS LISTED BELOW. This is imperative so we are getting the same information.
Your child’s teacher: (firstname.lastname@chariho.k12.ri.us)
The nurse: Tara.McAloon@chariho.k12.ri.us
The secretary AND clerk:
For day 1 of the absence, the student can complete this learning plan, only if he or she feels up to it. Completing this learning plan will count as a learning day as long as ALL assignments are completed and shared with the teacher(s). The teacher will be given the day to prepare the necessary materials needed for instruction on day 2. The teacher will notify the parent when the materials are ready to pick up.
If your child is unable to attend school on day 2 (or longer) due to exhibiting symptoms of COVID-19 or needs to be tested or quarantined, he or she will be able to participate in distance learning on day 2. It’ll be imperative that materials be picked up before 8:30 am on the second day of the absence, so the child has his or her learning materials to complete for the distance learning day.
During School Scenario:
When a child is sent home from school due to COVID symptoms, the child will have the option, only if they feel up to it, to complete this learning plan.
Annual Harvest Food Drive
The Annual Harvest Food Drive ends Friday, November 13. Please send in any non-perishable foods. The donations collected will be shared with families in need within the community. This is an annual contest between all the schools and we determine the ratio of non-perishable foods to the number of students. Two or three years ago Hope Valley School won for the first time ever. Let's win it again. I'll do something special for the class who collects the most cans, and if we win the banner I'll do something special for the whole school. Send in your contributions through the end of this week. Thank you in advance for your contributions!
DAILY SELF-CHECK
Parents and Guardians: As a reminder you must use the parent account for the daily self-check. Click Here for more details. You can now find the link for the daily self-check on the Hope Valley School website.
Online Parent Support/Open Forum
I received this information from a colleague and friend at URI. She will provide general support to parents who are parenting children in the early childhood years. We will answer questions, offer resources, suggest guidance and discipline strategies, bring up topics, summarize competing opinions, discuss COVID-19 regulations, etc. Please click on the attached for more information and scheduled meeting dates.
