PTSA Meetings to Begin at 6:00

NEW:

  • Meetings begin at 6:00
  • Meetings will be 60 minutes

Our PTSA meetings have begun at 6:30 for years but right now while we are virtual, we are going to move our start time to 6:00. We are also going shorten our meeting time to one hour (it has been 90 minutes). We recognize that many people are working at computers all day and spend a lot of time in virtual meetings these days. We are hoping these changes might make it easier for people to attend PTSA meetings.

Our zoom meeting will be open at 5:45 for informal gathering. The shorter meeting will start promptly at 6:00. If you are running late, please still hop on. The minutes from the previous meeting and treasurer report will be sent out ahead of time, so you can preview them before the meeting and have any corrections or question prepared. We will do our best to keep to the one hour time frame and still provide time for connection, questions, comments, concerns and new business.

We did put out a survey to members and anyone on our mailing list before we made these changes. We welcome you to take the survey and give your input to these changes and impacts on attending meetings. It is super short, just three questions.

https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfhjvcv0M96EnRJd5oy0MhXUnU2JFEMf91k2UUI6srLeVnv-Q/viewform?usp=sf_link

Thanks to everyone who has already responded to the survey! We appreciate you!

At our October Meeting

The agenda will include:

  • introductions
  • approve the standing rules for this year
  • review the budget for the upcoming year
  • guest speakers: Mr. Ricky Allen, JHS Principal and Mr. Sean Betker, Jefferson School Counselor
  • share committees and what they do
  • report back from committees with any news to share
  • new business/ideas/questions

Please come and check us out. We look forward to seeing you!

Jefferson PTSA Membership Drive

All Jefferson community members are invited to become PTSA members! That includes: parents, care givers, students, teachers, staff, alumni and community members.

  • Find out what’s happening at JHS
  • Make connections and build community
  • Share your ideas, concerns and experiences
  • Discover volunteer opportunities
  • Support our students, staff and community
  • Be a part of making things happen!

Standard membership dues are $12.50; $9.50 of this goes to the state and national PTA organizations. This year, we have also set up a sliding scale membership where you have the option to pay $5.00 or a custom payment of you choice, lower or higher than our standard membership.

We have both options on our square site linked below. Right now, the sliding scale choice is a little buried (we are working on it). When you click on the link, you will see featured items and our Standard Membership icon is found there. To get to the Sliding Scale Membership, click on the 'shop gear' link at the top of the page. We will hopefully have this fixed soon.

You are also welcome to attend PTSA meetings and events whether you are a member or not.

National Hispanic Latinx Heritage Month

To honor and celebrate our Hispanic and Latinx students, staff and community members, we'd like to highlight a Latinx poet, performer and educator of Puerto Rican and Jewish decent, Denice Frohman. She grew up in New York City and played professional basketball in Puerto Rico after graduating from college. She was the 2013 Women of the World Poetry Slam champion and the recipient of the 2013 Hispanic Choice 'Creative Artist of the Year.'

From 2021 article, Nine Latinx Women Changing the World, in Elle Magazine:

“Language is what gives our experiences a kind of home, and there was something inside of me that needed an outlet,” Frohman says. “We know there is a power in expressing ourselves, especially for marginalized communities to bear witness to each other's experiences.”

Check out Denice Frohman's performance, 'Accents,' below.

Consider Becoming a PTSA Officer, Students Too!

Although we have PTSA officers this year, we welcome anyone who is interested in becoming an officer. We would like to create President-Elect, VP-Elect, Secretary-Elect and Treasurer-Elect positions. These would be like apprentice positions where 'Elect' officers would learn the role and responsibilities of the position in a supported environment and prepare you to potentially take on that office the following year. Another opportunity for leadership is to chair a committee.

In addition, there are four open positions for student board members! Your voice and input is incredibly valuable to what we do to support Jefferson.

Contact any board member for more information, current board members' contact info is at the bottom of this newsletter.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

RIGHT AWAY: Edgefield Concert supervision,. There are a few concerts left. It's a fun time! Contact Georgie Honl, ASAP, to get more information. georgiehonl@yahoo.com When you volunteer, the PTSA receives money for your time.

FOOD PANTRY

Every Friday. There is set up, distributing and clean up. The time range is 11:00-3:00 or so. We could use help for all or part of this block of time. This is a very rewarding volunteer opportunity.

CONCESSIONS

Selling snacks and beverages during home sporting events. During Covid, everything is prepackaged, no food prep right now. Another fun opportunity!

COMMITTEES

There are lots of volunteer opportunities, big and small, within our committees. Chair or be a member of one of our committees:

Our friends at Kaiser's Center for Health Research sponsored a donation drive throughout the month of September to support our food pantry!

They have collected hygiene products including masks, dish soap laundry detergent, hygiene products and cash donations. There was an opportunity to have the first $600 of donations will be matched by an anonymous donor!

We should have the final results soon!
