- Education Career Fair 12:30-2:30pm Holmes Convocation Center--this is a meaningful opportunity to meet school employers and prepare for a teaching job! *This is not counted as a professional development seminar.
- PD Personalized Instruction for Students 2:00pm RCOE 124A-Brittany Guy '08 '10, Personalized Learning Coordinator-Winston Salem/Forsyth County Schools Since the inception of public education, the outcomes needed of our graduates have changed greatly. This session will provide an introduction to the concept of personalized learning as a possible solution to meet those needs. Shifts in the world around us have given us immediate access to data and content enabling personalized learning as a structure to support best practices seamlessly. Meeting the needs of each student while providing them choice in their learning seems great in theory but daunting as a task.

- PD Digital Data Walls Development and Progression 4:00pm RCOE #013 (Lower Level) Jennifer Hawkins '02, Principal-Table Rock Middle School, Burke County Schools Recently Burke County Schools had the vision to have data walls at all schools. As part of that expectation, digital data walls have evolved. The information was limited when we first started, but it has definitely progressed.

- PD Teaching Vocabulary 3:00pm RCOE #321 Jennifer Lynde '98, Director of Curriculum Instruction-Davie County Schools Learn more about the importance of vocabulary instruction, as well as, participate in engaging activities that teach student strategies and techniques for learning new vocabulary.

- PD Making It Work: Using Presentation Tools 11:00am RCOE #127 with Patrick O'Shea It's likely that you've been told that it is important to use technology in a classroom. It's also likely that you've been told frequently that the technology is a tool that you should master in order to effectively use when you become a teacher. How often have you actually been shown how to make that technology work, though? If your answer that that question is "rarely", then this is the session for you. This seminar will focus on the practical applications of technology...specifically, how to make it work. This particular workshop will focus on various presentation tools that you've likely heard of and perhaps been told you'll need to use in your classroom. Software such as Prezi and hardware such as Smartboards will be focused upon in this session, where you will get practical experience making the technology work.

- PD Increase Higher-Order Thinking and Engagement (without any extra on your part) 4:00pm RCOE 124A with Sarah Huff '10, Lead Instructional Math Coach-Neal Middle School, Durham Public Schools Teacher Talk Moves are a quick and easy way to increase engagement while promoting higher-order thinking as you directly instruct your students.

First Outreach Opportunity on October 25th!

AERA Undergraduate Student Education Research Training Workshop

The American Educational Research Association (AERA) is pleased to announce the AERA Undergraduate Student Education Research Training Workshop. The workshop, led by junior and senior scholars, will give fellows an overview of how education research is designed across fields, how quantitative and qualitative research methods are used in studies, and how research is applied to education policy and practice. Senior researchers and faculty from both academic institutions and applied research organizations (i.e., The American Institutes for Research, Educational Testing Service, the College Board, and the Urban Institute) will introduce education research as a field and share their area of expertise and knowledge with the fellows. As part of the workshop activities, the fellows will attend pre-selected paper sessions and presentations during the AERA Annual Meeting. Workshop activities will also focus on exploring graduate education, applying to graduate school, and beginning a career in education research.
Dates: The Workshop activities will take place Friday, April 13th through Sunday, April 15th during the AERA 2018 Annual Meeting in New York, New York.
Award: Fellows will participate in the Undergraduate Student Education Research Training Workshop during the AERA 2018 Annual Meeting in New York, New York. They will also have the benefit of a distinguished mentor as part of the award. The award includes conference registration and two nights of lodging. The fellows and/or their home institutions are responsible for transportation costs to New York, New York.
Eligibility: Candidates may come from a broad range of fields across the arts and sciences. Underrepresented racial and ethnic minorities and women are encouraged to apply. Candidates must be:
- Students in their sophomore, junior, or senior year of college in good academic standing.
- Interested in pursuing a graduate or professional degree that can lend itself to education research areas such as children and youth, school and schooling issues, higher education, education policy, student achievement, curriculum and instruction, education psychology, or education leadership.
Where to Apply: AERA will accept applications via the online application system (AERA Undergraduate Research Training Workshop Application). Applications will be reviewed by a selection committee of senior scholars and researchers. All materials must be received by 11:59pm (Pacific Time) on November 15, 2017.
About AERA: AERA, founded in 1916, is concerned with improving the educational process by encouraging scholarly inquiry related to education and evaluation and by promoting the dissemination and practical application of research results. AERA shares the products of scholarly research with peers, future educational researchers, practitioners, policymakers, and the public through its annual meeting, publications, and professional development activities.
