South Elementary School Thanks Our All Pro Dads!

On Friday December 8th the All Pro Dads planned to greet all the Car Riders and Bus Riders in lieu of their meeting. The idea behind this is to continue to keep our SOUTH STARS excited about coming to school the same way a sports team is excited about playing in a game. The All Pro Dads and the school strongly believe in having a partnership between home and school and this is yet another simple, fun way of modeling this relationship.

Their next service to the school is happening in January where they have planned out the building of "Buddy Benches" for our playground!

MIS Students track Christmas Trees around the Country!

Each of our 4th graders at Mooresville Intermediate School made tags to be attached to the Christmas trees that are being shipped out for sale from Barr Evergreen Farms. When the tags are found on purchased trees, it gives directions and information to the buyer that takes them to our 4th Grade Tree Tag Project website! There they are prompted to fill out a short questionnaire to help track the tree’s travel. The tags also have the student's class information so they can communicate and be a pen pal back the 4th grade class. The tags also get tracked on a virtual map where students can see where their tree tags ended up across the entire country! This ties directly to their Social Studies curriculum as they continue to study North Carolina natural resources and economics!

MMS 7th Grade Social Studies Students find their Inner Explorer!

In Mrs. Hamilton's class, students worked in small groups to research an early world explorer. First, they learned about their explorer by researching biographical information to summarize the main accomplishments of their explorer. Once the research was finished, students came up with an idea for their presentation. Some created segments for 60 minutes, CNN10, the History Channel, or created their own action news report. Once they had an idea, they used their research to write a script for their video, utilizing an online teleprompter. When they were ready to record, students selected appropriate costumes and dressed like their explorer as they filmed their video in front of the green screen. After filming, students used Discovery Education to locate video footage to import for the background. After cropping, editing, and mixing their videos, students created title pages and citation pages. The final step was to download the videos and present them in class to educate their peers about their explorer. Check out a few pictures and one of the videos below!

MHS Help Desk Students Assist with the Laptop Refresh!

The students who run the MHS Help Desk assisted with preparing for the laptop refresh. The refresh took place on Thursday, 12/14, and Friday, 12/15. It is a major undertaking to unbox and prepare and distribute approximately 1900 new laptops, as well as collect the old ones. And that's just for the high school! It certainly takes teamwork!

DRAFT 2018 - 2019 School Calendar

Please find linked below the DRAFT calendar that was presented to the Board of Education for a 30 day review at the December 12 meeting. They will vote on whether to approve this calendar at the January 9, 2018, Board of Education meeting. We wanted to give our families the opportunity to review this DRAFT calendar as submitted to our School Board. Please note that as a public school we have constraints that we have to work within per NC General Statute mandating start and end dates, as well as number of classroom hours for students and workdays for teachers. This DRAFT calendar was the result of several meetings with our calendar committee which consists of parents, teachers, and administrators. We believe it is a well-balanced calendar with strategically placed breaks for our students and teachers to allow for best educational practices to occur. The linked calendar includes optional and required teacher workdays, as well as holidays. In addition, to aid in any confusion, a summary specific to days off for our students can be found on page three. There are no changes this year to start and dismissal times. You can review these times on the attachment. Thank you so much and don't hesitate to contact Tanae Sump-McLean (tmclean@mgsd.k12.nc.us / 704-658-2543) with questions!
