Mrs. Wilson's Language Class
September 29-October 3
This Week in Class
We are aiming to end our group books by October 10. Some groups will be done before then and others might not be. Students who are not finished reading their books will have some extra time while the other students are starting their Group Book Project. These guidelines were handed out on Thursday. I will email the guidelines along with the Book Report Project guidelines and rubric. Some of the options may look familiar; they are all Book Report Project options as well. The Group Book Projects will be due on October 16. Students will get class time (October 13-16) to work on their Group Book Projects.
This week we discussed the definitions of the other terms on our plot diagram (rising action, climax, falling action, and resolution). The students will not only need to know these terms, but they will also need to be able to pick them out of the plot in their books. We will go over these terms and practice separating them out of stories next week.
Late Work
Late Work:
The intent of allowing students to submit late work was to acknowledge that 'life happens'. Things come up in our day-to-day lives that we sometimes cannot control. On those rare occasions, we felt (and still do) that students should be able to receive full credit for work submitted a day late. Unfortunately we have had students abuse this privilege, thinking that they could turn in assignments 'whenever they got around to it'. So our policy is as follows:
Late Work
With prior teacher approval, students may receive full credit for work that is submitted one day late.
Work submitted late without approval will be reduced by 10% per day.
Work submitted >3 days late will earn a grade of no more than 70%.
Any formative work (homework) submitted after the summative assessment (test) will result in a ‘0’.
For example:
Comprehension quizzes are due on Fridays. A student hands in their comprehension quiz on the following Monday; the highest grade they can receive is a 90%. If they hand it in on the following Tuesday, the highest score they can receive is an 80%. If they hand it in anytime after the following Wednesday, the highest grade they can receive is a 70%.
Parent/Teacher Conferences
Drop In Format—Parents will be invited in at the times below to meet with teachers of their choice. All teachers will be located in the gym. Parents may come in and see all of their children’s teachers or just one; it is up to you. These conferences are meant to communicate progress or concerns the teacher or parent may have about the child’s academic performance. If you feel you will need more than 10-12 minutes to discuss your concerns with one of your children’s teachers, please contact that teacher directly to set up a separate appointment at your convenience. Should you have further questions, please contact the office, we are happy to help.
Schedule:
Thursday, October 16— Drop In Conferences
Students with the last name A-M-- 3:30-6:00
Students with the last name N-Z-- 6:00-7:30
Tuesday, October 21—
Scheduled by the teaching staff—you have already been contacted if a conference is requested
If you cannot make it during the scheduled times, we understand. Please come when it is most convenient for you. The purpose of breaking up the alphabet is to minimize wait time for everyone. If you are not comfortable having your conference in the gym and would like to have a private conference with your children’s teachers please contact me to schedule an appointment for Tuesday, October 21. I will make arrangements for all of your child’s teachers to be present at the conference. I have emailed all of the parents that we (Mr. Grisolono and myself, with Mr. Bannasch and Mr. Gonwa popping in and out) would like to schedule a conference with. If you received one of those emails, please email me back with the top three time slots that work for you.
