Kindergarten News
Week Of February 1st
Highlights from last week....
We have been so busy in kindergarten. We have finished most of the mid year assessments. You should be very proud of your children, they have come so far and it is only the beginning of February. Thank you for ALL of your support at home. We would not have seen as much growth without your help. Please keep up the great work!! Report cards went home on Friday. There seems to be some confusion reading the information. We will send home some additional information to assist you.
In Phonics, we continued learning letters and their sounds. We have been practicing tapping out the words and building words based on their sounds. We also practiced using them in dictation. Most of our children are really understanding the concept and learning about sentence structure at the same time. We will keep working until we master the skill!
We practiced writing our first and last name on our work. They are really working hard on this skill. Some of my friends have VERY LONG names! Please reinforce this at home as well.
In Reader's Workshop, we continued with the strategy of using multiple clues when we come to a tricky word. A strategy that good readers use is to think about what we read. When we sound out the letters in the word and the word we say doesn't make sense or sound right, we will learn that we need to stop and do some reading work. We need to ask ourselves, "Does that make sense?", "Does that sound right?" and "Do the letters match?" Because this is a newly introduced skill, we will be working on this skill for a few weeks before we can move on. If your child masters this skill before we move on, we will work with them independently to challenge them at their level.

In Math, we continued to compare using words more, less, fewer, same as and equal.
In Science, we learned about simple machines.
A peek at our learning this week....
Tuesday will be Ground Hog day! We cannot believe it is February ALREADY!
Wednesday is our 100th day! We will have our celebration on Wednesday. A paper bag went home with your child with a paper attached explaining our activity. Please have your child put 100 items in the bag and write three clues about it. We will try to use the clues to guess what is in the bag. We will also use these items for other activities we have planned. Thank you for your participation!
In Phonics, we are going to continue to learn letter sounds and work with these sounds to create words. The children are becoming experts in sounding out words in their books.
We have also been practicing writing our first and last name on our work. Please reinforce this at home as well.
In Reader's Workshop, we will be focusing on flipping the vowel sound while they are reading to see if it makes sense. Have them show you some of their strategies at home. They are really doing great! Please keep reading those books that we have been sending home weekly with your child. Also, please practice the new sight words that went home. The more sight words they know, the better readers they will become!
