A Letter from the Director
War Eagle!
Welcome to the Auburn Family! We are thrilled to have your student(s) (yes we have two sets of twins this year – so excited) in the Exploratory Major with us. Your student has made an excellent decision to start their college career as Exploratory. If you couldn’t tell at Camp War Eagle we LOVE what we do here and believe it works. Our philosophy is that exposure to all majors followed by intentional, guided exploration of potential majors will result in an appropriate choice of the right major. We have learned that each individual student approaches choosing their major in a unique way. Just like any other developmental milestone, they work at their own, unique pace and different assignments and opportunities will vary in their levels of impact, which is why we incorporate an array of assignments and expectations into our class to be sure we meet the needs of each student.
During the first few weeks of the semester we will focus on helping them settle in to college both socially and academically. We will talk about adapting their study skills to the academic rigor and volume of their college courses, and for those who didn’t have to study in high school it will be a crash course. We will get them out to O-Days (O for organizations) to explore their options for getting involved during their freshman year. We will also help them understand what type of exploratory they are ranging from tentatively undecided, deciding between a few options, to seriously undecided, having interests all over the map (Gordon, 2007). We will also help them discover their comfort level with making decisions, which is a major influence on why some students are exploratory and why some struggle in making a choice. Wherever your student falls in exploratory type and comfort level with decision making is right where they should be and right where we will meet them.
Thank you in advance for sharing your students with us. Thank you for the support you will provide them along this journey. We agree in our office that “not all who wander are lost” (Tolkein). Instead we believe that those who wander embrace opportunity and open themselves up to discover possibilities.
Sincerely,
Ruthie Spiers
