D103 to Offer Half Day Kindergarten Only for 2020-2021
Dear Parent/Guardian of an Incoming Kindergarten student,
As many of you are aware, the Illinois State Board of Education and the Illinois Department of Public Health released guidance and requirements for the opening of the 2020-2021 school year. Please read the ISBE guidelines.
In-person learning will require daily health/symptom certification, physical distancing in classroom and school buildings, and the wearing of face masks in the building at all times. It will also be important that students do not share materials and toys, which will negatively impact collaborative play. All of these parameters will be most challenging for our youngest learners to adhere to as they are introduced to school for the first time.
Thus, District 103 will be moving to a half day kindergarten program (AM/PM) for the 2020-2021 school year. This decision will allow for everyday in-person learning to smaller groups where we can focus on the essentials and develop relationships with our students. We will send a survey to all kindergarten parents asking for your preference for an AM or PM class for your child. Please note that we will balance classes to keep them small. If either the AM or PM requests become too large to maintain adequate physical distancing, we will hold a lottery to balance the classes appropriately. You will be asked your input regarding AM versus PM sessions next week.
Because we will only have a half day program, there will be no tuition collected this year.
We hope that this decision brings some peace of mind to many incoming kindergarten parents, knowing that your children can start their school experience at Laura B. Sprague in small classes with our wonderful kindergarten teachers everyday.
We will reach out again with more information throughout the summer.
Scott Warren, Ed.D.
