6th grade read "The Night Gardener" by Jonathan Auxier a creepy, gothic mystery that won this years Children's Book Prize in Canada. Overall, the students liked the book and had lots of great discussion points and questions. They noted things such as plotting, themes and writing style. The question "Who was your favorite character" got some interesting debate. Thank you Ms. Mortimer for joining in our discussion - we loved having you!!
7th grade read "Serafina and the Black Cloak" by Robert Beatty winner of the Goodreads Middle Grade Book Award for 2015. Another creepy gothic type story this book was overwhelmingly liked (and a sequel will be coming). Students picked up on writing style, elements of a mystery and had questions about Serafina's character and believability of aspects of the book. It was a rousing discussion!
Both books have recently been optioned for the movies so it will be interesting to repeat the discussions next year once the movie is out!
I am looking forward to next month's discussions. There is still room in both the 6th and 8th grade book club groups for April (we will meet the 2nd week of May) Please encourage students to sign up!
