Alice Catherine Evans

Paragraph 1
Alice Catherine Evans was born January 9th, 1881 Neath, Pennsylvania. She was born on a farm with her brother Morgan and parents William and Anne she had a poor family but she was happy. Later in her life she went to high school. She was to poor to go to college so she and her brother started to work at an elementary school she worked at that school for 4 years in 1901 because she couldn’t afford to go to college. She got lucky because a free course on nature was offered to rural teachers at Cornell University Alice took advantage of that. While taking her course she also took a basic course in agriculture.

Which got her interested in being a bacteriologist she got a scholarship at Cornell and a bachelor's in science she received the first scholarship offered to a woman at The University Of Wisconsin. she was hired by a professor that worked for The University Of Wisconsin. In 1910, Alice was a scientist and it was a permanent spot (that is amazing for a woman at the time because women used to not have the same rights as men) at the U.S Department Of Agriculture Bureau Of Animal Husbandry also known as the dairy division she was researching the bacteriology of milk and cheese.

From her studies she identified a bacterial infection that is found in cow's milk and goat’s milk that could cause undulating fevers( fevers that can go up to down temperatures) in humans she had to warn people of this. In 1918 researchers, veterinarians and physicians were doubtful of this breakthrough they did not think that a woman could do it without a doctor's degree could make that big of a discovery. The dairy workers laughed at her for raw milk should be pasteurized to prevent people from diseases.

However scientist just got to the same conclusion as Alice in the late 1920’s. She retired. But she got the milk disease herself sadly it never left her system but that didn't stop her she did motivational speeches to woman she did this for a couple of years until she later died in September, 5th, 1975, in Arlington, Virginia.

Alice Catherine Evans was a pioneer scientist and a great scientist. She saved many lives from the infection and was inspiring to women without jobs and with she was a good motivational speaker she is an inspiring scientist.
