The Chapman University double-reed faculty; Jessica Pearlman, oboe and Dr. Rebecca Rivera, bassoon are hosting a double-reed day. This event is FREE and open to all ages!
We are very excited to announce that Dr. Jonathan Davis, oboe and Judith Famer, bassoon will be our guest artists.
This event is designed for all double-reed players and will be a wonderful opportunity to meet, learn from and perform with other talented players from throughout the area. Did I mention we'll provide FREE catered lunch as well? This is not to be missed.

Jonathan Davis, oboe
JONATHAN DAVIS plays regularly with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Pacific Symphony, the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra, Opera Pacific, and the San Diego Symphony. He studied with John Ferrillo and Elaine Douvas at Juilliard, where he earned a MM and a DMA and was awarded the first Stephen Alpert Memorial Scholarship. While living in New York, Dr. Davis was a member of the New Haven and Hartford Symphonies, and performed with the New York Woodwind Quintet, the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, the Brooklyn Philharmonic, and as a soloist on NPR’s Performance Today.
He began his musical training as a soprano in the Choir of Men and Boys at St. Paul’s Cathedral in Boston under the direction of Thomas Murray. He studied oboe with Fred Cohen at New England Conservatory during high school and continued with Ronald Roseman at Yale University, where he received a B.A. (cum laude) in East Asian Studies and the Lustman Prize.
Dr. Davis’ students have gone on to careers in musicology, music education, music management, and, of course, performance. They have played with the New York Philharmonic, the American Ballet Theater, the New World Symphony, the Los Angeles Opera, the Cincinnati Symphony, and on Broadway. He is also a member of the Northwind Quintet, a woodwind quintet that introduces the fun of music to elementary schools, and is active as a studio musician.
Judith Farmer, bassoon
Judith Farmer enjoys a rich and varied career as a chamber musician, orchestra musician, soloist and teacher. She received her education at Indiana University and at the Hochschule fuer Musik in Vienna. From 1984-1996 she was principal bassoonist of the Austrian Radio Symphony Orchestra, performed and toured regularly with the Camerata Academica Salzburg under Sandor Vegh and with numerous chamber music ensembles in Vienna. Ms. Farmer has appeared as a soloist in the U.S. and in Europe, including the Salzburg Festival, and has participated in chamber music festivals in Prussia Cove (UK), Martha’s Vineyard (MA), Salem (NY), La Jolla (CA), Oaxaca (Mexico), Beverly Hills (CA) and Garth Newel (VA). For the 1995-96 season she held the position of visiting professor at the Hochschule fuer Musik in Graz, Austria. She has also taught at the International Mozart Academy in Prague, the Chautauqua Music Festival and the Henry Mancini Institute.
In 1996 Ms. Farmer moved to Los Angeles and since then has performed with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, including as guest associate principal in spring of 2009.She has played on the scores of over 150 major motion pictures and recorded with such artists as Daft Punk, Josh Groban, Billy Childs and Barbra Streisand. She is currently principal bassoonist of the Santa Barbara Chamber Orchestra, a member of the Los Angeles Opera Orchestra and the Long Beach Symphony.
She is an avid chamber musician, who enjoys collaborating with composers on new works and has had numerous works written and dedicated to her.
Her recordings as a soloist and chamber musician are available on Albany, Centaur, Ex-House and Orfeo Records.
Critics have described Judith Farmer’s playing as “impeccable” (American Record Guide), “masterly” (Fanfare Magazine) and “brilliant” (Kronenzeitung, Austria). Barnaby Rayfield also noted in the July/August 2011 issue ofFanfare Magazine: ” … the playing on [composer Gernot Wolfgang's CD Short Stories] is uniformly excellent, especially from Judith Farmer on bassoon, finding expressive extremes of that instrument I didn’t think possible.”
Jessica Pearlman, oboe
Jessica Pearlman currently holds the position of principal oboe of Orange County’s Pacific Symphony. Ms. Pearlman moved to Southern California after completing her Master of Music degree in 2009 at The Juilliard School as a student of Elaine Douvas, Nathan Hughes and Pedro Diaz, all of the Metropolitan Opera. While in New York, she performed and toured with some of the city's most esteemed ensembles, including the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, the New York City Ballet and the Metropolitan Opera. She was a member of the Verbier (Switzerland) Festival Orchestra from 2007-2009, participating in two international tours led by Charles Dutoit and Ludovic Morlot and working in the summer under such conductors as Valery Gergiev and Kurt Masur. As a soloist Ms. Pearlman has been featured with the San Jose Chamber Symphony, the Colorado College Summer Music Festival and the Mansfield (OH) Symphony Orchestra where she also served as principal oboe during the 2005-2006 season. Ms. Pearlman has performed with Orli Shaham on the Pacific Symphony’s prestigious Café Ludwig Chamber Music Series and tours regularly with her innovative New York-based chamber group SHUFFLE Concert.
Ms. Pearlman hails from Half Moon Bay, CA where she studied oboe and violin and performed in the San Francisco Symphony Youth Orchestra and with her local community orchestra. Her continued study of music and science brought her to Oberlin College and Conservatory, where she earned a B.M. under the tutelage of the late James Caldwell as well as a B.A. in neuroscience, as a pre-med student. Her summer research in brain tumor models conducted at Johns Hopkins University was presented at the 2006 conference of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons.
Ms. Pearlman is a dedicated and passionate teacher. She served as a secondary oboe teacher to undergraduate students while at Oberlin College and Yale University (where she spent the first year of graduate school), and in 2006 served as woodwind professor for the Associaciòn Nacional de Conciertos youth music festival in Panamà. She has been an adjunct faculty member at Long Beach City College since 2010 and in addition to Chapman University will be joining the faculty at Irvine Valley College, Saddleback College and California State University, Fullerton in Fall 2013, in addition to maintaining a large private teaching studio. Equally adept at the English horn, Ms. Pearlman has been an audition finalist for English horn positions of many of the nation’s finest orchestras including the Chicago Symphony, Houston Symphony and San Diego Symphony. She currently resides in Long Beach, California with her rescue dog, Nadia.
Rebecca Rivera, bassoon
Dr. Rebecca Rivera enjoys an active career as a performer and educator. As a bassoon and contrabassoon player, Dr. Rivera has recorded for several film and music projects and performed with many ensembles throughout Southern California including Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, Riverside Philharmonic, Debut Orchestra, American Youth Symphony Orchestra, Golden State Pops Orchestra, Southeast Symphony, Torrance Symphony, Westchester Symphony, Peninsula Symphony and the Pasadena Symphony and Pops Orchestras. Dr. Rivera won the Southeast Symphony concerto competition in 2001. Dr. Rivera recently performed with Elton John at the 125th Anniversary concert for Yamaha. In addition, Rebecca has performed with Wayne Shorter, recorded Jazz Ballet with Louie Bellson at Capitol Records, performed and recorded for Jackie Evancho and appeared in a Verizon commercial. Dr. Rivera has performed at Walt Disney Concert Hall, Cerritos Performing Arts Center, Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, The Orpheum and The Los Angeles Music Center. Dr. Rivera is a guest artist on a CD by flamenco latino guitarist Tony Ybarra, Fiesta. In addition to maintaining her private teaching studio, Dr. Rivera is a lecturer at the University of Southern California and teaches reed-making workshops throughout the year. Dr. Rebecca Rivera completed her Doctorate of Musical Arts degree in bassoon performance at the University of Southern California, studying with Rose Corrigan and Judith Farmer.
