Biome Description

Deserts are located in hot areas like Africa, Australia, and South America. Some deserts are located in the United States. The largest desert in the world is the Sahara Desert. Deserts cover about one fifth of the worlds surface. The four major types of deserts are hot and dry, cold, coastal, and semiarid. Most of the deserts are not flat, most of them are hills.

Abiotic Factors

Deserts weather is hot year round. Deserts rarely have cold weather. Hot and dry desert temperature ranges from 20 to 25 degrees Celcius. Cold desert temperatures range from -2 to 4 degrees Celcius. There is not a lot of rainfall in deserts. Deserts get about ten inches of rain each year. Deserts have an arid climate.

Bodies of Water

There is not a lot of bodies of water becaus there is very low rainfall. If there are cacti in the desert then he's there is water. If it rains in the desert it will not rain enough to make a body of water.

There are more canyons in the desert because in the desert it is arid. Canyons do not form in rainy areas. At the bottom of canyons are rivers. One of the biggest canyons in the desert is the Grand Canyon.

Desert islands have yet to be populated by humans. The Devon Island in Canada is known to be the largest uninhabitat island. Desert Islands are where movies are filmed after a shipwreck happens.

Animals and Plants

Desert animals that live in the desert have many adaptions. They have to survive the searing heat, intense heat and not a lot of water. Most animals in the desert get their water from seeds and plants. Most animals are nocturnal that life in the desert. Some of the animals that live in the desert are wrens, bats, foxes, rats and vultures. Desert plants have the ability to collect and store water and have features that reduce water loss. Desert plants look like any other plants in any other biome. The plants have to survive in the harsh Enviroment of the desert.
