Seymour Intermediate activities:
In addition to the Fall sports mentioned above, students will have access to the following extra-curricular and academic activities:
- Academic teams, Robotics, General Music with a Band focus, General Music with a Choir focus, Student Council, Class Officer, 5th Grade Track Meet, and numerous class/hallway activities
Student Unknowns:
- Switching classes: Students will spend the majority of their day in one hallway. They will switch classes for Math, ELA, and Science/Social Studies. Students will also switch to go to Encore classes (Specials).
- Lockers: Lockers are new to every student and the staff at Seymour Intermediate are prepared for this to be a big learning process. Students will have the opportunity to practice opening their locker with their teachers on many occasions.
- Recess: All students will get one recess a day. We have competitions and opportunities for students to earn extra recess as a reward for academic growth and good behavior.
- Seeing friends: We are excited about the opportunity to have students for two years of their education instead of one. With this structure, Seymour Intermediate teachers, administrators, and support staff can build deeper connections with students. The "one and done" mentality of the Sixth Grade Center made it difficult for students to relate to the mission and vision of the school. Though students may not be in the same hallway as their friends from elementary school, the extended time they will spend at Seymour Intermediate will allow them to develop new connections and friendships before moving to Seymour Middle School.
- IEPs: Students with an IEP at the elementary level will retain that IEP throughout the transition to Seymour Intermediate. Academic goals and services will continue to be implemented to help students with their individualized needs. Students with IEPs will continue to receive push-in services in Math and ELA, as well as to receive pull-out services when appropriate.
- Enrollment: Students who are currently enrolled in a Seymour Community Schools elementary will continue to be enrolled with Seymour Intermediate. Parents/guardians will be asked to register their returning students to update the Harmony profile and fill out yearly required forms. Any new student to Seymour Community Schools will enroll their new student.
- Teacher distribution: All current 5th grade teachers will relocate to Seymour Intermediate and will teach a certain subject in 5th grade. For example, a math teacher will only teach math.
- Transportation: Bus drop-off, car-rider, and walker directions will be released in a later edition of this newsletter. Like elementary schools, we will be separating bus and car-rider traffic to reduce congestion and potential safety concerns. Students who are walkers must have a parent note on file to be able to walk home from school.
