Oh, the Weather Outside Is...Weather
On Thursday, January 11, the following email was sent to students, parents, and adults registered to receive alerts and emails from ThrillShare:
Wildcat Parents/Guardians/Adults,
With the weather conditions in the upcoming forecast (snow, wind, extremely cold temperatures), the Building Principals have asked teachers to prepare Alternative Methods of Instruction (AMI) lessons for students to complete in core content areas (English, Math, Science, Social Studies) if school is not in session and the District utilizes an AMI day.
AMI assignments for K-8 students will be paper packets, while HS assignments will be a mix of online and paper assignments. If school is not in session, the nature of the day (Snow Day = no assignments / AMI = complete AMI assignments) will be indicated in the alert.
The following list of radio and television stations will be notified and will announce school closings: KMMO - 102.9 FM; KMMO - 1300 FM; KRES - 104.7 FM; KMZU - 100.7 FM; Thrillshare; Marshall Democrat News Website; District Social Media & Website.
Thank you, and have a great day -
Slater Schools
So...what does all of this mean?
AMI stands for Alternative Methods of Instruction. An AMI day is a day in which school is cancelled (e.g. in the case of inclement weather) but students do not have to make up the day (later in the calendar) because they will be provided the opportunity to complete “Weather Work” assignments over a specified period.
Snow Day vs. AMI Day
If school is cancelled, the alert will include the distinction about whether the day will be counted as a Snow Day (no work assigned during the day out) or an AMI day (students are expected to complete 'Weather Work' assignments - HS students will have a mix of paper assignments and online work. HS students were issued Chromebooks and Chargers at the beginning of the school year. If a student does not have internet access at home, he/she needs to talk to their teachers about printed/paper assignments.
Smile, Seniors!
Lee's Studio will be on campus on Tuesday, February 6 to take Senior Composites at 9:00 am. (SCCC students will take their photos when they return to campus.) We will dismiss half of the Senior Class at a time when Mrs. Kersiek is set up and ready. Here's what you need to know:
- Everyone in the class will take a photo, whether they plan to purchase them or not. The composite is part of our school records and a long-standing tradition.
Mrs. Kersiek provides both the dress shirt/tie for the young men and drape for the young ladies. In the past, we've found that it's easier for ladies to wear a tank top under their clothes that day (You'll change in the bathroom, but the drape is open in the back and fits slightly off the shoulders.) Gentlemen, please wear a tee shirt under your clothes - the color doesn't matter, as the shirts for the composite are black dress shirts. Pants won't be seen in the picture for boys or girls. (See picture above for example.)
- Later, Mrs. Kersiek will send us information for you to access previews of your pictures. This is where you will order your own prints if you choose. You'll also select which photo you want to appear in the class composite. If you haven't selected your photo and shared the number with Ms. Wiseman by the deadline we give, Ms. Wiseman and I will choose your photo for you.
Student Standing Explained
The new semester means that all student grades are above failing, so no one is in poor standing for his or her grades. The next eligibility list that includes grades will take place on January 22, 2024.
However, attendance is cumulative for the school year. Students below 90% attendance are not currently in good standing and are expected to adhere to previously shared expectations.

Parking Expectations
There have been some parking struggles that need to be resolved before the offending drivers lose their driving privileges on campus for up to 30 days. Here are the issues:
- The grass in the South lot is not a designated parking space. Don't park there.
- Don't double park against the guard rail (after lunch is the biggest time this is a problem) in the South lot.
- Don't block vehicles from being able to get out of the South lot.
Fitness Center Expectations
The Fitness Center membership contract states that students who have not graduated must be accompanied by an adult if using the Fitness Center.
Failure to follow this rule can result in the cancelation of the adult's membership and discipline for the student.
Hudl's Format Changes
Our streaming services with Hudl will no longer be going to the Slater School Streaming account on Youtube. All events will now be found on:

This link has been added to our Youtube account's bio in order to send our fans to the appropriate location for games. Fans will also be able to download the "Hudl Fan" app on their smartphones, search Slater High School, and watch the game that way.

ATTENDANCE POLICY GRADES 6-12
The Slater Board of Education, school administration, and teachers believe that the responsibility for students attending school lies jointly with the student, the parents, and the school. The following attendance policy is designed to maximize student attendance while allowing for the necessary absences from school throughout the year.
1. Parents are requested to telephone the school at 660-529-2278 by 8:30 a.m.
when their child will be absent from school. If no call is received by 8:30 a.m.,
the office secretary will attempt to make contact with parents.
2. Students are allowed to make up all work missed during an absence unless the
absence is the result of an out-of-school suspension. It is the student’s responsibility
to obtain and complete missed assignments, which are subject to individual teacher
policies.
3. Juniors may request to take 3 college visits. All seniors are allowed 2 college visits.
Arrangements must be made in advance through the Counselor’s office. If
arrangements are not made in advance they will not be excused.
4. Field trips or any activity sponsored by the school are not considered absences
from school. Students are responsible for informing teachers of their absences
and obtaining assignments the day before the scheduled event.
5. For credit purposes, any student that is 25 minutes or more late for a class will be
considered absent from that class.
6. Students with an attendance rate below 90% will not be allowed open lunch.
7. Students must be in attendance for at least 4 consecutive hours of that school day to
participate in or attend any school sponsored event.
8. Students must be in attendance for at least 4 consecutive hours on Friday to
participate in or attend any school sponsored weekend activities.

A big THANK YOU to everyone who volunteered, supported and gave blood during today's NHS Blood Drive!! This was Slater's first drive in 5 years and brought around 30 units saving almost 90 lives alongside Community Blood Center!
What staff member deserves a shout out?
Take a minute to let me know all about it by filling out THIS FORM or clicking the banner above.
Students, Parents, and Staff can give a shout out to any Slater Schools employee! We'll make sure they receive a copy of it and will look for ways to share them with you throughout the year as well.
Let's get to bragging about all the good people around here!
OLD BUSINESS
Policy Says...
Ms. Crystal will determine if you need to stay at school or go home. If she decides that you need to go home, SHE will call your people and make arrangements for you to leave. (Read: You don't call/text your people - especially before we know you don't feel well.)
Making a List
Here's what the handbook says about GOOD STANDING:
GOOD STANDING
To be considered a student in good standing, a student must not be in violation of the
attendance policy (attendance must be above 90%), have no outstanding discipline referrals OR appear on the current F list.
In order to participate in extracurricular events including (but not limited to): dances,
field trips, school-sanctioned sports events; a student must be in good standing.
Students in grades 6-12 that are not in good standing will have closed lunch and be required
to sign in daily in the cafeteria, where they will remain for the entire lunch period.
The sign in sheet for closed lunch is on the South wall, below the bulletin board. It is up to the student to sign in and remain in the cafeteria during lunch.Failure to stay in the cafeteria for the whole lunch period or sign in (even if you stayed) will result in a CLOSED LUNCH REFERRAL. Here's what the handbook says about CLOSED LUNCH:
CLOSED LUNCH
Failing to stay or sign in for Closed Lunch
Grades 9-12
1. Warning
2. Friday School
3. 1 day in the Transition Room for each day not signed in
Stay in the Loop!
Text notifications will be used to share information about School Closures, Updates to the posted calendar, distribute newsletters, etc.
Your phone number will NOT be shared outside of the Student Information System.
How do I log in to my SIS Student Portal?
We have a new Student Information System (PowerSchool) this year, but it can do everything last year's system could do - and more - like see your schedule, grades, lunch balance, attendance, and MORE!
Where can I park?
Some students won reserved parking spots last May (see the table below), thanks to their Student of the Month achievements and Trivia Contest finishes. Those students have earned the right to paint their spots with a design that they choose (and J Clem approves).
If it’s a painted or reserved spot, don’t park there. You’ll be asked to move. If it’s an open spot, it’s first come, first served.
Spots students CAN’T park:
- The Circle Drive
- Teacher Parking (off of Elm Street, in front of the Elementary Building)
- The Cafeteria Lot
- Reserved Staff Parking in Gravel/Bus lot (South end of lot)
If you’re driving to school, you need an SHS parking pass. You can get one from Ms. Wiseman in the HS Office. They are $5/school year.
The Student Handbook has more info about Driving, Parking, and consequences of violating the rules. Check it out at SlaterSchools.net!
