Notes and Updates
Hi parents,
Thank you to everyone who attended 3-way conferences. The students were very happy to show their portfolios and games. I hope everyone enjoyed their time and experiencing the learning with the students.
In Writing, students reviewed revising and editing throughout the writing process. Students are getting better at adding more details and making their stories seed stories. We also worked on adding dialogue by using speech bubbles and quotation marks. Lastly, students worked on using better action words to make a character move and to help the reader visualize their story.
In Reading, students started a new unit "Walking in our character's footsteps. We reviewed character feelings and investigated how our characters change over time. This fit very nicely with our writing unit and students seeing multiple ways to express feeling without saying the feeling itself.
In Science, we finished up our unit on matter. Students identified different solids and liquids and the process it goes through to change. They melted butter and froze it to see the difference in the state of matter and the different properties.
In Math, we reviewed greater than, less than, and equal to with larger numbers. They also identified greater than, less than, and equal to using place value to describe numbers, such as 1 ten and 2 ones. Students reviewed using a hundreds chart by adding and subtracting 10 and 1. We are continuously practicing place value and identifying numbers through place value.
Cheers,
Shannon Keane
Special Announcements
Writer's Cafe
The students have worked hard on their writing all year and want to share what they have done with all of you. Please come to our Writer's Cafe event on Sunday May 10th at 8:00-8:45. The students will be doing different readings for parents to enjoy. You don't want to miss out!
Portfolio
Please remember to send your child's portfolio back to school this week if you took it home after conferences.
Calendar
As a fun way to countdown to summer, 1st grade will be having an A-Z countdown. The countdown will start this week, on May 6. Each day will be assigned a different letter and we will celebrate that letter in some way. For example, A is for Art day and we will complete an art activity in class. B is for Book Buddies and students will share a book with a friend. Some days will require students to wear or bring in something from home. For example, E is Exercise day and students need to wear tennis shoes to school. F is Flower day and they need to bring, or draw a picture of, a flower to give to a friend. This is a fun way to stay engaged until the end of the school year. I have sent a paper copy home today. Thank you for your support with this exciting activity!
