Counseling Corner with Miss Headley:
COPING SKILLS
A coping skill is a way that you handle overwhelming feelings, anger, stress, fear or any strong emotions you may have.
When faced with these overwhelming, stressful, or tense situations we can choose to use a positive or a negative coping skill. Student(s) have been learning the differences between these coping skills and how to handle strong emotions. Adversity is inevitable, however given the skills they may find these situations a little less stressful when using a positive coping skill. Here are a handful of the positive and negative coping skills we have been discussing. Please help us to continue the discussion at home to help your student choose a positive coping skill when dealing with overwhelming, stressful or tense situations.
Positive:
Deep breathing
Taking a break
Coloring
Drawing
Talking it out with a friend/teacher/parents
Writing your feelings down on paper
Exercising
Utilize a stress ball
Listening to music
Negative:
Yelling
Hitting others
Throwing objects
Running away from an adult
Kicking others
Saying mean things
Shutting down and refusing to speak
LOST AND FOUND - Is your child missing a clothing item or lunch box?
