Maungatapere School
A word from the Principal
Kia ora Parents and Whanau
Welcome back to the final term for 2022. As with every term we have a full calendar and look forward to our community being involved in school events. We hope everyone had a good term break despite the rain and enjoyed the wonderful weather over Labour Weekend. The main learning focus for term four will be on economics and technology. Classes will be working toward creating and marketing a product to sell/share at a market day on Friday 2 December. This will be held in the afternoon with parents and whanau able to come in and check out the learning. We are looking forward to seeing our school community at Ag Day on Saturday, hopefully the weather will look after us.
We are hoping to have our new covered area completed for Ag Day – we are slowly getting there!
Welcome to our new pupils who have joined us at the start of this term: Shresh Ram, Elijah McGrath, Ruby Holmes-Libbis, Rosa Holmes-Libbis, Kaitlyn Margaret Holmes-Libbis, Amelia Mullaney, Tama Riley, Medina Goncalves and Sanonoi Saekiew
Congratulations to the following students who have received school awards for their achievement and attitude especially in relation to our school values:
Susannah Hovell Rm8 - Her commitment and outstanding effort in preparing for her role in production.
Matilda Firth Rm4 - Outstanding improvement in literacy - keep working hard, its paying off!
Ryker Coleman Rm2 - For his enthusiasm for new learning.
Work from Room 1
Agriculture Day
Everyone is looking forward to holding our school Ag Day this Saturday with whanau and wider community attending. We hope all the animals and gardens are doing well and students will be able to share their knowledge and expertise with our judges on the day. A detailed information sheet was sent out yesterday with students. It has also been emailed out and is available on the website.
A few key points:
We would like each family to provide some home baking for the food tent. This can be brought to the school office Friday or Saturday morning (straight to the food tent).
Students need to bring their class schedule items to school tomorrow/Friday to prepare and be judged. These will be on display in classrooms on Saturday along with Calendar art. Please remember to send photo boards to school on Friday. Class schedules are available on the website also.
Teachers wanting parent help on Friday morning will have notified their class whanau via seesaw.
A timetable of helpers for the food tent has been sent out to those that have volunteered to help.
Y0-3 Gardens and Y0-2 creative pots need to be at school Friday for judging.
All other categories need to be here Saturday morning for judging to begin at 9am. Registration begins at 8.30am. Y4-8 gardens can be brought in on Friday to be stored in pool area, however they will need to be registered on Saturday and put in the correct area.
We will have transport available at the carpark and bus bay for garden drop off and movement (wheel barrow, trolleys) on Friday and Saturday.
Families with animals are able to park on the edge of the field Saturday morning – calves at the top by playground and lambs/goats along the side of the field. There will be people directing cars on the field for safety. If you do not have an animal please use the school carpark, bus bay and Corsair Drive.
Ag Day letter hunt is a new activity for students to be involved in on the day. Eftpos will be available to purchase food etc on the day.
Our focus is on the work students have done – the animals, gardens and creative arts – rather than a fund raising event. Please take the time to look at the animals (it is great watching the interaction between students and animals), the gardens and garden art with family and extended whanau. There will be some activities available for children to participate in toward the end of the judging. The day is generally concluded with prize giving around midday, with trophies being given out.
Central Day
This will be held at Barge Park on Thursday 3 November. This is an interschool Ag Day, where our students can take their animals (calves, lambs, goats) and show them again. They compete against students from other schools and there is a wide range of trophies available. Even if your animal has not done well on our Ag Day, another time and different judges can change results and it provides another opportunity to show the work you have put in. We encourage students to take their animals, as there is an overall school award for the school with the most points from the day – yes we want to be competitive!!
Calendar Art
Ordering calendar art will be online this year with information going out when it is available. The art work is on display at Ag Day in classrooms for you to view, so make a point of having a look. There is some amazing art work on display.
Term 4 Sun Safety
All students need to have a hat at school to wear at break times and when classes are outside for sport and physical education. Those students without hats will be required to stay under the shelter by the hall. We do ask that hats are named so they can be easily returned. It is good if students can leave a hat at school as this avoids them being forgotten. Teachers do talk about sun safety as part of our health programme and we do our best to prompt and remind students about sunscreen; but it is good if parents can set some expectations with their children about this also. Sun screen is available in the classrooms.
Congratulations
Addie Wood and Dilan Brown shared their winning speeches with the Mangakahia Lion’s Club members on Tuesday evening. They can be very proud of their efforts, especially with the term break happening between their presentations. The club members were very impressed with the quality and presentation of their
speeches.
Clothing and Sporting Activities
This term our students are involved in athletics – running, jumping and throwing as we build to our school athletic sports and the interschool athletics for senior students. To participate it is important that students have suitable clothing – shorts and Tshirts or short sleeved tops are best. Please do not send students to school in singlet tops or short/ripped shorts – while these are great for the beach or around home they are not suitable for school, as they do not provide enough sun protection and can make participation in some activities challenging.
This term classes will also be involved in a cricket skills programme and depending on the weather swimming will begin after athletics has been completed about week 6.
Out of Zone Enrolments
Families have been advised of ballot results for new entrant enrolments for next year. If you have 5 year old children starting next year or you know of new children moving into the area please contact the school or get the new families to do so. This helps us plan for new entrant classes.
Assessment and School Organisation
At this time of year teachers are busy with assessment of students – checking on the learning progress they have made in literacy and maths so they are able to give good information and feedback to the students and for end of year report writing. This information is recorded on our Etap system for teachers to use as a starting point at the beginning of next year. We are also working on organisation for the following year, including our school structure, goals and classes. This information will be shared as the term goes on and it is finalised.
Reminders:
Netball and sports uniforms: There are still a few uniforms and jackets needing to be returned. Please check and return these as soon as possible.
