SGE Spotlight: Media Center
“Oh the weather outside is frightful but my book is so delightful!” Stonegate students have been cozying up with some great new books this chilly season. Popular picks include Dog Man, Who Was? and the Wings of Fire series. In November, we enjoyed a visit from Zionsville children’s author and illustrator Rob Harrell where we learned about his career in publishing. We even helped him create a few new silly characters! It was a blast and we look forward to more author visits in the future. In fourth grade, we have been discussing literature genres and making “genre pizzas.” Yum! Third and fourth graders have been busy learning about book classification, alphabetizing, and the Dewey Decimal System. We have also been practicing our keyboarding skills in our awesome computer lab. Grades K-2 have been reviewing how to care for library books and practicing media center etiquette.
Thank you for your birthday book orders. I appreciate your patience while we process requests and wait for a new shipment of books. Come check out the new birthday books display in the library with Pusheen the Cat!
Last but not least, I would also like to take this opportunity to thank my wonderful parent volunteers. I am so grateful for all you do to make the SGE media center a truly special place!
STEM Parent Survey
As a district, an innovative STEM program (science, technology, engineering, and math) was implemented in all of our elementary schools in 2012. In 2015, all of our schools were STEM certified by the IDOE. Our programming has grown and developed over the years, with STEM teacher/coaches collaborating with classroom teachers to ensure students’ experiences with STEM are meaningful and embedded throughout the students’ school day. We are in the process of collecting data in order to evaluate our program and improve our practices. We would love your input! Please click the link below to fill out a 5-question survey about STEM. Please contact Mrs. Skura (STEM Teacher—jenskura@zcs.k12.in.us) if you have any questions. Thank you for your participation!

Weather and Recess - Be Prepared!
Each child is expected to be suitably dressed for play outdoors. As the weather turns colder, each child needs a winter coat, hat, and gloves. Snow pants, waterproof boots, warm gloves/mittens are required to be able to play in the snow. All children play outside except on rainy, icy, or very cold days (wind chill below the 10-20 degree range). Inside recess will be held on those exceptional days. A child who is well enough to come to school is well enough to go outside and play. Exceptions will be made if parents send in a note from the doctor stating that the child needs to stay inside.

ZCS BYOD Computer Purchase Option
This time of year, the ZCS Technology Department is asked quite often, “what kind of computer should I get my student for the Bring Your Own Device 1:1 program in grades 5th-12th?”
Normally we just give the minimum specs for the computers but this year we have worked with Lenovo to provide our families with an option to purchase the same device that ZCS uses for the rental program. It will be at the same discounted price ZCS pays ($506), tax-free, and shipped to your door with free shipping in 2-3 weeks. If you wish to purchase instead of renting the device we selected as a technology team for its ruggedness and performance, just follow the link below and create an account with Lenovo:
https://www3.lenovo.com/le/1213352583/us/en/1213521421/login
After creating your account, we will approve you as a ZCS resident and you will receive an email from Customer Registration at ecomm.accounts@lenovo.com. After being approved, simply log in, select products, then “laptops and ultrabooks” in the upper left corner to select the only option, the Lenovo ThinkPad 11e 5th Gen.

ZCS, like other public schools, has a no-idling policy for vehicles on campus. The purpose of the policy is to limit vehicle emissions that might be brought into the schools and adversely impact the health of our students and staff. If you are stopped on campus for more than 5 minutes, please remember to turn off your engine. We thank you for abiding by this policy to help reduce the exposure to these emissions.
