"Oh! The Places We'll Go!"
WHAT'S NEW? (March 20th, 2015)
Hi Parents,
We finished up our unit on Human Growth and Development with an in-school field trip from the Robert Crown Center for Health. I am hoping by now that you have had "that" conversation with your child. I highly recommend having these kinds of conversations in the car. Why? Well, since no eye contact needs to be made, there is no chance of walking away, and the conversation will end once you reach your destination, it will be less awkward for everyone. :) Try it!
We started talking about the Civil War this week. The students are reading a variety of text about this time in history to build background knowledge. We will be starting a simulation after Spring Break and it is definitely one of my favorite units. The students will become a character, either on the North or South, and will "live" each day as that person. It is a wonderful way to learn by being actively involved.
Report cards will be coming home next Friday.

Math
This week in Math, the students continued to learn about graphing and coordinates. They went a bit above the 5th grade curriculum and learned about the four quadrants of a grid and negative numbers. They created a Kermit picture by plotting the correct coordinates. They tested on Thursday and will start Chapter 13, Properties of Triangles and Four-sided Figures next week.
Readers Workshop
The students are enjoying the Book Clubs and are eager to read their books each day. Their conversations have been a pleasure to listen to! They are very respectful to each other and have a lot to talk about. They have been identifying the Sign Posts in their chapter books as they read.
Social Studies
We finished up our Science rotation on the Human Body and will now be learning about the Civil War.
Writer's Workshop
Our Human Growth and Development Unit took place during our writing time this week. We did, however, sneak in some time and worked on creating a conclusion to our papers. Next week, we publish!
