Weekly Update

Big picture

Friday, October 9th, 2020

Dear Families,

We had a big focus on safety this week, completing our 3 Fall Fire Drills. Students exited the building each time calmly, with their cohort, wearing their masks and ensuring that there was appropriate physical distancing. Well done, Hawks!

We continue to refine our school protocols and practices around COVID-19, as updated information and recommendations for schools are provided by Public Health. The Public Health Nurse who has been assigned to our school came today to observe our students in class and out at recess, and will provide some suggestions and recommendations regarding anything we can do to improve upon the safety protocols we have in place. Our Public Health Nurse was very complimentary about everything that we already have in place...sounds like we are doing a great job to keep our staff and students safe! We will keep families updated if there are any significant changes that we will be implementing. Don't hesitate to connect should you have any questions or concerns.

Un gros merci à Mme Goddard, qui a organisé la course annuelle Terry Fox! Our Annual Terry Fox Run/Walk was held today: classes made sure to take time to do jogs and walks in the community, and around the track. As this year marks the 40th anniversary of the Terry Fox run, students worked all week long on "What's Your 40/Quels 40 choisirez-vous" activities: 40 jumping jacks, push ups, wind sprints, etc....we were very active all week long, and there was a lot of good conversation in classrooms about the importance of recognizing Terry Fox's legacy every year. Thank you to all families who supported via online donations: if at any time you wish to contribute to the Terry Fox Foundation, you may do so using our school link: http://www.terryfox.ca/JamesRHendersonPSKingston

Student Data Verification Forms, Computer Use Agreement, 2020-21 School Year Calendars, Safe Arrival and Student Accident Insurance information were all sent home today. Please ensure that you review all the Data Verification Form, make changes as appropriate right on the form, and send it and the Acceptable Use of Technology form back to the school by next Friday (even if there are no changes to be made). Thank you!

A reminder that all students must do the daily COVID self-screening assessment, and follow the guidelines from Public Health. There is a link to the online screening tool below.

We wanted to take a moment to express how thankful we are to be working in this school, surrounded by your friendly, kind, bright and enthusiastic children, a dedicated staff, and parents and caregivers who are incredibly kind and supportive. You all make our jobs a whole lot easier!! Thank you all very much to all of our families and staff for making our school community awesome.

We wish everyone a very happy Thanksgiving weekend, filled with laughter, special moments and celebration.

COVID-19 Daily Active Screening

All students, staff, bus drivers, bus monitors and visitors to schools must perform a daily self-assessment for symptoms of COVID-19 before each school day and before putting students on a school bus. Staying home when sick is important to help stop the spread of COVID-19 and other viruses in our community.

COVID-19 Screening Tool

Parents and caregivers must review the following checklist with their child/student before sending them to school each day and before putting them on a school bus.

Please use the online COVID-19 School Screening Tool available in English and French (released October 1, 2020). You can print or download this version in English or French (by clicking on the top right). We are working on translations in additional languages. This new screening tool replaces what was provided previously (Sept. 21, 2020 version).

Fridays have been declared Henderson Hawk Pride Day!

James R Henderson Parking Guide

Drop off and pick up times are very busy, and we want to ensure the safety of all of our students and their caregivers as they enter and exit the school. Please consult the Driving and Parking Guide below to see where there are safe, designated parking spaces that are all within a 3 minute walk to the school. The area directly in front of the school is a designated student drop off zone: you must remain in your vehicle and are permitted to stop for a maximum of 3 minutes. A reminder that parking is not permitted on the shoulder of Roosevelt Drive opposite the school, and that the City of Kingston will be enforcing this no-parking zone. Thank you for ensuring that you help to keep everyone safe by respecting our drop-off and parking guidelines.
