Egg Drop Contraption

By Brock Graycalny

The Problem

The problem was to get my and my partner's egg (egg was named "Eggy") to the ground safely from a fire truck ladder 45 feet high off of the ground. To get the egg to the ground safely we had to build a egg contraption using limited supplies and our own ideas.

The limited supplies include:

  • 2 rubber bands
  • 20 cm x 20 cm piece of cardboard
  • 3 cotton balls
  • 5 plastic straws
  • 2 pieces of paper
  • 5 packaging peanuts
  • 50 cm kite string
  • 50 cm tape
  • 20 cm x 20 cm piece of plastic bag
  • 2 dixie cups
  • 5 toothpicks
  • 5 q-tips
  • 3 popsicle sticks

Making the Contraption/ Solving the Problem

The group I was in came up with a lot of ideas but eventually narrowed down to one idea. Our final contraption had two dixie cups taped together. Inside was 5 'packaging' peanuts (the "Eggy" was also inside)).On top of that was two rubber bands attached to the two dixie cups and a card board platform (the card board was meant for a landing surface, since it would be the first thing to hit the pavement) on top of one of the dixie cups was 50 cm of kite string connected to what we wanted to act like a parachute.

What I Would Change if I Had to Do The Egg Drop Again

If I were to do the egg drop again I would add straws to the top of one of the dixie cup, with the straws being on top of one of the dixie cup it would act like a helicopter and spin down to the ground even safer then my groups contraption. Another thing I would add would be to not poke the holes into the parachute (since we poked holes in the parachute last time and I think it made it worst).
