FMS Counseling: Mrs. Burfield, Mrs. Horstmeier & Ms. Jo

Being in school all day, every day, helps your child get the most out of middle school. Encourage good attendance with these ideas.

* Point out that there is no substitute for being in class. Your student needs to be present to hear teachers explain concepts, to participate in group projects and class discussions, and to ask questions.

* Schedule doctor, dentist, and orthodontist appointments for before or after school hours or our professional development days when students have the day off. If you can't, try to arrange during lunchtime.

* It will be easier for your child to get up on time for school if he /she has had at least nine hours of sleep. Set a reasonable bedtime, and make sure he/she puts away electronic devices so he/she isn't tempted to stay awake to read messages or play games.

FMS Counseling has a new look and location: We have a couple locations in the building this year. Mrs. Burfield and Mrs. Horstmeier are on the second floor in their office and a calm room next door for students that may need a break. See pics below. Ms. Jo is located in the main office. We look forward to a great year here at FMS!

Needing to see the school counselor?

Students needing to access the counselor's office can submit a form from their chrome books by clicking on the apps button. This form comes only to the counselor's. 6th graders will learn how to use this app on Tuesday, August 27th when counselors meet with them through their ELA classrooms. You can also ask your teacher for help. If you can't locate the form you can also shoot your school counselor an email. Obviously if there is an emergency, students will be sent to the Counselors Office immediately. This is just a great way to help students stay in the classroom for instruction time .

Here are a few ways you can reach out to us in the FMS Counseling Office:

Mrs. Horstmeier works with students with a last name starting with an A-J and can be reached at and Mrs. Burfield works with students with a last name starting with a K-Z and can be reached at

Ms. Jo is the Counseling Office secretary and can be reached at

Counseling Office phone number is 573-590-8208

Dressing Out- Students only need to bring one set of clothes per week (some bring an extra set just in case). They will not need to bring new clothes every day. They will keep their clothing in their PE locker during the week. We will remind students to take their clothes home on Friday to be washed over the weekend.

Music 6: What great week! We learned a rhythm game called Jump In/Jump Out, pretested on our knowledge of written rhythms using musical symbols and terminology, AND started our H.O.P.E. playlists! These playlists are intended to help students connect music to emotions!

Next week, we will wrap up HOPE Playlists, and practice writing and performing rhythms!

Arts Alive: We have been working hard! Students received the music for the November concert, and have been learning their Disney medleys! Next week we will continue learning how to read choral music, and learning our concert music!

Choir: Yea! We have folders, we're rocking sightreading, and starting to explore singing in voice parts. These singers are doing an excellent job! Next week, we will really dive into some concert repertoire!

If you want to join after school choir, please come see me, students, for a sign up sheet! Check out the rehearsal schedule on the picture below!

We focused this week on rhythms in most of the classes. The 8th grade guitar class is working on reading notation while the 7th grade class is beginning chordal work. We will be continuing this and learning more songs in the coming weeks.

8th grade band is continuing to learn their music for the homecoming parade and game. I would like to give a big shout out to the 7th grade clarinets! They just learned how to go over the break which is a technique that can be challenging. They are doing great!

6th grade is continuing to discover music theory and prepare for the arrival of instruments NEXT WEEK!

Please consider following me on Twitter @MrT_FPSBands. I will be providing a daily playlist which your students will hear when they enter the room. You may also email me at

News from the Art Room

Hello! I am deeply sorry I have to be out the first few weeks of school due to illness. I am however very excited to start the year, and will be back as soon as I am fit for duty.

I look forward to seeing a bunch of new faces with our new sixth grade group, as I am equally looking forward to our returning seventh, and eighth graders!

Upon my return we will no doubt find our cadence, and fall right back into our routines, much like last year, with a few new changes to classroom flow.

For the first two weeks of school, I will have a substitute, and have projects lined up for all grades to get started on. They will be instructed, and informed of classroom procedures and rules, but I will go into more detail with them upon my return.

If you have any questions now, or in the future, don’t hesitate in dropping me an email or contact Mrs Houf, or Ms Hogan through the main office if you are in need of immediate assistance.

I should be returning after Labor Day, so my hope is to only be out one full week. I assure you this will not be a problem, and we will reset, get acquainted, and hit the ground running. I look forward to diving into many projects this year and to begin our journey together!

Thank you,

Mr Chapman

The FMS Thrive Hive

The Fulton Middle School Thrive Hive opened for business on Monday, August 21st. The store is open 7:25 to 7:45 each morning. If students aren't able to shop then they can email Mrs. Horstmeier @ or Mrs. Yates @ for an appointment to shop.

The Thrive Hive is designed to allow students to use their Hornet Bucks--earned through the Positive Behavior Support Program--to purchase items from the store. The Thrive Hive was created to help the needs of the FMS Student Community.

Items currently needed for the store are:

Any age appropriate toys, DVD's for the holidays.

As we gear up for winter: Hats, gloves, scarves, and coats.

Snack items: Nutella snack packs, Slim jims and pop tarts.

Other needs are ear buds and water bottles.

We will be gearing up for the holiday season so baskets to make gift packages for students to purchase would be great.

All other items are appreciated as well.

If you would like to donate, please call Fulton Middle School at 573-590-8200.…/thrive-hive-gets-middle-…/646415/

Please keep in mind that some students at FMS have an allergy to nuts, tree nuts and popcorn. Please be mindful of what food your child is bringing to school, and notice the signs throughout the school building. Thank you!
