AMI SNOW DAYS
Virtual Learning on Snow Days
Our goal was to have students engage in some level of continued learning, that would be flexible and engaging at whatever level each family could invest. We want to acknowledge that every family, student, teacher and situation is different, and that we wanted to make these days as flexible and meaningful as possible, while balancing the wishes of families who want a complete replica of the school day and those who want something laid back and preserves the traditional charm that we all remembered snow days to be.
I have had several questions about AMI snow days and expectations, and I wanted to share with you directly, that we were really pleased with the number of students who participated in one fashion or another. I also wanted to communicate what minimum expectations we have for the day, and also to offer grace to those families who cannot meet the minimum expectation for a variety of important reasons.
Classroom teachers are asked to :
- Email parents the day of the Snow Day by 8:00am (or before if we know one is for sure happening), with a SMORE that has both tech and non tech options.
- Specials teachers (the special assigned to that day) will also include in the SMORE some fine arts options for learning from home for the day.
- Encourage students to do one thing from EITHER the tech or the non tech options in each subject area. (They can mix and match if they want, or do them all- but that is not the expectation)
- Learning shouldn't take more than a couple of hours at the most, unless a child goes above the expectations.
- The classroom teacher will offer 2 short google meet opportunities so that students can check in and receive direction on the options for learning, in an effort to extend the positive culture of the class into homes.
- Remember that not everyone has technology (maybe because it wasn't sent home, or a family member is working) so options that are easy to deploy with a blank piece of paper and pencil are always encouraged.
- Make connections and collect any work that is returned to school.
- Do not introduce new concepts during an AMI day (snow day).
Just a quick set of data about our two AMI days this past week
Teachers reported:
- 70% (average) of students attended the google meets
- About 85% of students turned in some sort of work (either tech or non tech) indicating participation.
We are always for ways to improve, so if you have suggestions or ideas that will help us enhance this experience, while balancing the vast needs of various families, please let us know. Simply sharing with your child's classroom teacher will be the quickest way to have your voice heard. We will be looking at continued improvements throughout the year. Thank you for your partnership.

Fireside Chat with the Fam:
Habit Highlight- Think Win Win
Focus Lesson- THINK WIN- WIN is an attitude toward life. When conflict arises leaders use win-win thinking to reach solutions. Thinking win-win takes courage and consideration. You need courage to stand up for your beliefs. At the same time, you need to be considerate of others’ beliefs. As a family how could you work this conflict out?
You and your sister have to decide who is going to do the dishes and who is going to walk the dog. You both want to walk the dog.
At home extension to this week's innovation Team- One of the focuses for the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen is manners. Tonight help set the table for dinner and when dinner is finished help clean up!
