LCAP Surveys

Each year we will ask our CPA families to complete a survey related to the District’s Local Control and Accountability Plan (LCAP) which identifies goals, measurements, and actions planned by CPA to improve student outcomes.

An important part of our LCAP is the input gathered from our school stakeholders. Equally important is input and involvement from parents. We want to encourage your input into the LCAP survey as it is an essential piece of our LCAP report and charter.

Please take a few moments to provide input to this important process by clicking on this link: LCAP Parent Survey Link

If your child(ren) are enrolled in 4th grade or higher, please take a few moments to have them provide input to this important process by clicking on this link: Student LCAP Survey

Thank you for providing feedback on Cabrillo Point Academy’s 2020-2021 LCAP progress to meet the eight state priorities and assisting the school’s stakeholders to develop new goals for the 2021-2022 LCAP.

Kicking off a Month of Art Learning in April!

Welcome to Art Month at Cabrillo Point Academy! Art is a fascinating subject that encompasses many forms and many mediums. It is the beautiful expression of one's heart and soul for others to see. Throughout history, when civilizations were stable, art flourished. From cave drawings and stone arrangements to Ming Vases and calligraphy to the Sistine Chapel and the sculpture of David, art was used to express culturally significant subject matter and societal norms. Art history is human history.

Art also challenges our mind to think in a different way and in so doing it helps students both academically and behaviorally. Look at this recent study on how art programs in school showed improved verbal, reading and math skills as well as critical thinking skills. With such a broad subject to explore this month, we will only be able to touch on a few disciplines in both fine arts and performing arts. We encourage you to find what interests and engages your student and explore beyond what is covered here.

This week we will be looking at drawing and painting. Drawing is believed to be one of the oldest forms of art. Before the written language, drawing was used as a form of communication depicting objects and abstract concepts. Over time, drawing included adding color, which slowly led to painting. As civilizations developed, so did drawing and painting. For a brief history of drawing timeline, click here. This week we are including some drawing and painting resources for your students to enjoy. As Pablo Picasso said, “Every child is an artist.”

Community Connections

Big picture

Virtual Clubs may not be meeting this week, but we have a few new clubs starting next week that we'd like to highlight!

Tuesdays @ 1: Spanish Vocabulary Song Club (for the younger crowd, but anyone is welcome)

Tuesdays @ 2: Sing-a-Long Club: Come ready to sing and learn a new song, then during the 3rd and final session we'll have a musical concert! Students will prepare a 1-minute musical piece with the instrument of their choice.

Wednesdays @ 1: Math Club for TK - 2nd graders: Come each week to learn some fun skip counting songs.

Thursdays @ 11: Book Tasting Club: Students bring 2 - 4 favorite books to share and discuss

Thursdays @ 1: Patriotic Club (TK - 2nd): Say the Pledge of Allegiance, sing a Patriotic song, learn about some important patriotic icons and locations, and play a Kahoot game.

Thursdays @ 2: HS Hangout Club: TED Talks for HS Leadership (check out the Club Hub for topics for each week...please spread the word!)

--> A note about the HS Hangout Club. We were very intentional this semester about offering something substantial and useful to our High School students enabling them to not only learn something valuable but to hang out and get to know each other. The teachers who have taught put a lot of time and effort into their sessions and it was awesome, but we had low turnout. We had a "Social Club" focus where students learned the art of small talk and making meaningful conversations, then we had a "Career Exploration" with three sessions focussed on: self-reflection, career selection, and planning and exploration. We had a "Games" focussed one where students interacted through online games and now we're offering our final 3-week session on "Leadership" masterfully using TED Talks. Check out the Club Hub for more specifics, ...it will be well worth it.

If you still have not received an email from your HST with the Club Hub information and link, please reach out to them and request it.

For information on how to navigate Club Hub, please click on the button below.

If you have any questions, please contact your HST or Gina Garland: gina.garland@cabrillopointacademy.org

Enrichment

Important upcoming Enrichment dates and information can be found here!

Returning library materials? Please keep in mind:

  • Parents should still have access to their old library system accounts. By logging into your account, you should be able to see which items are checked out to your child(ren).

  • If you are unable to access your old library account, please feel free to call the school and speak with a Library Specialist, who can check to see if any items are still checked out to your family.

  • There is no need to separate enrichment and library materials when returning them to the library.

  • There is no need to add library materials to students’ inventory sheets when returning them to the library. Each library item has an asset tag on it, which our librarians will use to check it in.

Thank you very much for your help with getting those items returned!

Homeschooling Advice

It's a Privilege

"We are the lucky ones. We live each day, conscious that our choices shape the next generation indelibly. These little people are with us for a short 18 years and we get to see it all unfold, right before our eyes.

I’m cleaning out my files and shelves, stumbling across handmade birthday cards and handcrafts from my children when they were still children.

It feels like such a big responsibility to raise them and hope they choose to be decent people with good values.

There’s a lot I couldn’t control. There are mistakes I made. Sometimes I got it exactly right. And often: the difference between a mistake and a good decision were razor thin apart.

So much is the result of that word we don’t like: luck. Or serendipity. Or lack of foresight.

But I do know this. At the end of the day, I have never regretted being there for all of it. I hope you can hold onto that too—that being with your kids, now, as their parent-educator is a privilege, even when it’s hard."

Take the PSAT for Fun and Profit

Like the SAT, the PSAT is a college admission test overseen by the College Board®. It meets most state homeschool testing requirements and covers reading, writing, and math, but doesn't include an essay. The PSAT is a fairly inexpensive test compared to most annual assessments. In addition to being practice for the SAT, the PSAT can help you find a college, indicate career options your student might not have considered, and can lead to scholarships.

The complete name for the test is PSAT/NMSQT®, which stands for Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. The name can help you decipher the two functions of the PSAT. The first part, PSAT, means it's a practice test your child can take "for fun" to learn about the SAT. The second part, NMSQT, stands for National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test, which means your child can take the test "for profit" as a junior. Either way can benefit your student.

Taking the PSAT for Fun

The name PSAT means the test is preliminary, practice, or pre-SAT. Your child can take the test for practice in 10th or 11th grade. I call this taking the test “for fun" because scores don't matter. The results are only for you, with no negative repercussions at all. You can use it as a starting point, before your child studies for the SAT and provide firsthand practice for the SAT. It is also used to estimate your child's SAT scores.
