MATH: Questions to get math thinking going in your classroom
TECHNOLOGY: Family Communication Tech Tools
I recently attended EdCamp at Pulaski High School. I learned of a few tools that will help engage families using technology.
1. Remind.com is a free tool created for educators to safely & easily communicate with families through text messages & emails. To learn more, go to https://www.remind.com/features
2. Smore.com - www.smore.com
I'm using Smore to create this "Curriculum Conversations" newsletter. Teachers can use the site to create family newsletters or use for students to publish their writing. Give kids an assignment to create your weekly class news or create together as a class. Smore says its design tool is even easy enough for first- and second-graders to use. However, teachers should be aware that kids can easily share their creations with other site visitors if they're using the free version of the site. Smore's educator version, available for a $39 annual fee, makes all flyers private. Here is a website with teacher ideas & reviews of smore https://www.graphite.org/website/smore#more
WRITING: Writing Process mentor texts & Writing Notebook blog
Here are some book titles that can be used as mentor texts to show the writing process. https://leadliteracy.com/articles/190
The Sharing Our Notebooks blog is a great resource for teachers to show students how writers capture ideas in their writing notebooks including pictures of actual writing notebooks. http://www.sharingournotebooks.amylv.com/

Comprehension Connections: Metacognition & Schema
Target Audience: K-5
Thinking is invisible so it is important to approach the teaching of reading comprehension as making thinking visible. This session will focus on metacognition and schema---the foundations to other comprehension strategies. Through demonstration and modeling, participants will actively experience the sequential launch of the lessons geared to honor the gradual release of responsibility. Strategies are derived from Tanny McGregor’s book Comprehension Connections.
