Mrs. Turner's Tidbits
What a great day we had yesterday! We always LOVE the parade and all the great costumes! It’s such a fun time to see the children so excited for the parade! Excellent memories every year. The creativity really shines! I just wish it wasn’t so cold this year! Brrrrrrr!!!!
Thank you all for attending parent teacher conferences last week! We had great attendance this year! Nearly every classroom had 100% attendance. Mrs. Wellner had 100%, Mrs. Sage had 94%, both kindergarten teachers ended up with 100%, Mrs. Swilley had 100% and Mrs. Casteel had 95%, both second grade teachers had 100%, Mr. Taylor had 100% and Mrs. Losey had 94%, Mrs. Anderson had 94% and Mrs. Cooley ended up with 89%. In fifth grade both teachers had 100%, Mrs. Seivley had 96% and Mr. Krahn had 100% again this year! Thanks again for coming and visiting with the teachers! We LOVE seeing all of you and having the opportunity to visit with you about your children.
We held our first nine-week honor roll recognition at the Intermediate School on Wednesday, October 30th. We held it at 2:30 again this year. We do this to make sure that all students who are being recognized have the opportunity to attend. Many do not have transportation early in the morning other than the school buses. This has kept many from receiving the award in front of their peers in the past. We will hold all honor roll recognition events at 2:30 this school year. They are scheduled on the calendar already.
Thanks to all the parents for working with us on not bringing items with rubber or latex. We do have different allergies and this is one. Unfortunately, with this type of allergy, it never improves. The more a child with this allergy is exposed to latex, the worse it gets. This can turn into a very dangerous, life threatening event. We want to do everything in our power at school to try to prevent 100% of the exposure. We do need the help of all of our staff, students, parents and community to do this. Thank you for always watching out for anything your child brings to school that may have a rubber smell. We need to keep those items out of our school.
PTO is sponsoring a Craft Fair on Saturday, November 2nd!!! This is always a fun event that helps our PTO out with funding. PTO has purchased playground equipment, laminators, benches, blinds and multiple teacher grants. It is through fundraisers and donations that we can continue to purchase items to benefit our children. We hope that you will come to spend some time with us on Saturday!
We plan to have a special event for Grandparents on the 26th. We would like to invite our Grandparents to come and enjoy a bit of music or plays from our students. We will host one “show”. It will be at the Intermediate School beginning at 2:00 pm. Pre-K through 6th grade will perform. If the weather is inclement, we will provide transportation for the Primary students on that day. This will also be a dress up day for students and staff. We look forward to seeing lots of grandparents! IMPORTANT! IMPORTANT! IMPORTANT!~ If your child will be leaving with their grandparents, please make sure they are on the list of people allowed to take your child home. If they are not, we will need a note from you stating that they have permission to take your child home with them. I do realize that this coincides with the program at COE. Unfortunately, there is little that we can do since we want to try to pick a date when many “out-of-town” grandparents may be coming to town for the holiday. We appreciate your understanding with this.
Oh, one last note, please don’t forget to fall back on Sunday, November 3rd! It is here already! This year is flying by!!!

HEALTH INFORMATION FROM NURSE CHRISTAN
What’s Going Around?
This time of year, there are all sorts of “bugs” going around and causing illness. We are seeing a lot of students absent and I thought I would share some information about the most common illnesses we are seeing in the schools.
Viral gastroenteritis (stomach flu): Signs and symptoms include watery diarrhea, abdominal cramps and pain, nausea, vomiting, occasional muscle aches or headache, and possibly a low-grade fever. Symptoms usually just last a day or two but may last as long as 10 days.
Strep throat: Signs and symptoms usually include a sore throat that starts quickly, pain with swallowing, fever, red and swollen tonsils that sometimes have white patches or streaks of pus, tiny red spots on the roof of the mouth, and swollen lymph nodes in the front of the neck. Usually it does not include runny nose, cough, or hoarseness.
Common Cold: Signs and symptoms usually include gradual onset, sneezing, stuffy nose, and sore throat and possibly mild to moderate chest discomfort and cough. Unlike influenza, chills, fever, and headache are uncommon.
Hand, Foot, and Mouth disease: Signs and symptoms usually include sores in/on the mouth, rash on the hands and/or feet, fever, sore throat, and/or loss of appetite.
Influenza: We have not seen any cases of this yet, however, there have been confirmed cases in Butler and Sedgwick County. Common signs and symptoms may include abrupt symptom onset, fever, body aches, chills, fatigue, weakness, chest discomfort, cough, and headache. Sometimes these symptoms are accompanied by sneezing, sore throat, and stuffy nose. Please note the requirements for students returning to school have changed. Your student must stay home for 5 days following the first onset of symptoms or until they are fever free for 24 hours without the use of fever-reducing agents, whichever is longer.
This information comes from the Center for Disease Control website and is meant as a guide, not a diagnostic tool. Please see your physician if you feel your student may need treatment. If they are prescribed medications that need to be administered during the school day, please have the physician fill out the Medication/Inhaler Administration form. We will also need to have medication in the original labeled container for the medications to be given at school. As a reminder, your student needs to stay home for 24 hours after vomiting or diarrhea. Also they should be fever-free without the use of Tylenol or ibuprofen for 24 hours before returning to school. For strep throat, the student may return after being treated with antibiotics for 24 hours. Thanks for all your help to keep our students well!
