Mid-Winter Break (Feb. 21-22)

Mask Mandate Update
“We are now in a place in the pandemic where an emergency order should be replaced by individual action to protect ourselves, especially masking in public and getting vaccinated,” stated Leigh-Anne Stafford, Oakland County’s director of health and human services.
We strongly encourage masking indoors and, although they are not required, you are welcome to continue wearing masks. WBSD will provide further guidance regarding isolation and quarantine, as we learn more. To learn more about the guidance, please visit the Oakland County Government page.
Thank you for your continued support!
Keeping Everyone Safe
Please review these important tips to keep our students and staff safe during arrivals and dismissals. It would also be very helpful to screenshot or share this information with anyone else who might be dropping your student off or picking them up. With nearly 500 students arriving and dismissing in short periods of time it's important that everyone commit to a safe and orderly process.

Be Recess Ready!
The students will be going outside to enjoy recess on most days, even during the winter. If the *feels like* temps are 10 or above they will be going out. Please take a quick inventory of what weather appropriate gear your child may need at school each day. They LOVE going outside as much as possible and need to have the right gear with them.
Doherty Spirit Week
February Capturing Kids Hearts Focus- Kindness
Why focus on Kindness?
- Kindness boosts positive emotions. Acts of kindness create neural pathways that enhance feelings of well-being and the natural flow of feel-good endorphins and neurotransmitters.
- Kindness is self-replicating. When we perform an act of kindness, it is likely to encourage others to act in a similar way.
- Kindness reduces stress and anxiety. Kindness promotes positive relationships with other people. Anything that helps you to build bonds with other people helps decrease anxiety.
Kindness in Action:
- Celebrate small things. Start each day with Good Things as a class. Publicly and privately affirm kind and thoughtful actions and attitudes.
- Create opportunities for students to regularly affirm each other. Once a week, dedicate time for students to write notes of affirmation to classmates and school staff members.
- Model Kindness. Be mindful of body language, tone, and mindset. Kindness is learned by example!
New Faces!
We have a new face in the Doherty office. Doherty Dolphins will be seeing Miss Jodie in the office next to Miss Stephanie full time starting this week. She is replacing Miss Michelle who took a new position at our ACS building. Miss Jodie is a former Doherty parent and volunteer and is so happy to be working in the office.
1st & 2nd Grade Families
Mrs Carson has created 2 videos which might be helpful for you to review with your student.
How to find CANVAS & LOGIN:

How to complete a BADGE:
https://westbloomfieldsd.instructuremedia.com/embed/fcb73d20-cacb-4598-825c-c6d8a3b84e45
In order to achieve Pine Cone "Credits", your student will need to login to CANVAS.
There is a "Badge" system within the CANVAS course that will award your student with a special badge for completing the reading logs & reading responses.
PLEASE NOTE:
After the 1st Badge, ALL other Badges require the student to complete 2 books, prior to finishing the CANVAS requirements.
Your student should read both books BEFORE they attempt to complete the CANVAS assignment to earn badges (after badge #1)
Students who are familiar with their login & password are having a much easier time navigating the Chromebook during iCenter time.
I would recommend extra practice with logging in & finding the CANVAS course.
Thank you so much,
Please reach out with any questions or concerns.
Happy Reading!
Mrs. Carson

Tools for Families to Talk to Their Children
For families seeking a way to talk with their children about recent events, you may access the following resources as a starting point:
Non-specific safety conversations may be more appropriate for younger students and may begin with presentations like the following on the Johns Hopkins site: “Talking to Your Children About Safety” for children in grades K-2 and children in grades 3-5. Using children’s books that use the power of narrative to teach valuable lessons is also a developmentally appropriate method to help our young one's process information. Some examples include the following:
The Rabbit Listened. A child has their castle wrecked and animals come and talk to her to give her advice. The rabbit comes to listen to her and she shares her feelings and gets brave to build the castle again.
After the Fall. Humpty Dumpty gets the courage to climb the wall again.
