Kindergarten Happenings
Weeks of Jan. 6th and Jan. 13th, 2020
Reading
We are on Unit 5 in Reading. Our vocabulary words are: require, plant, harmful, soak, crowd, develop, amazing, enormous, and imagine.
Other skills that we are learning include: Pronouns: A word that replaces the noun. E.g: she replaces girl.
New Sight words: do, my, are
Plural noun -s. E.g: rabbit (one rabbit) add s ( more than one) rabbits.
Category size words: big, small, short and tall. E.g: In our story we compared the girl to her mother. The girl is short. The mother is tall.
Breaking words into syllables- clapped,counted and blended the syllables E.g: garden: gar/den (two syllables). We listened to poetry and found the rhyming words and those that were repeated in the poem.
Phoneme Characterization- We looked at three pictures at a time and found the one that doesn't belong. E.g: hook, hippo and kitten.
Blend words with short i, o and a. E.g: hop, him, had,. hit and hot.
We are continuing to work with the CVC pattern: E.g: big
Introduced the short e sound and words that begin with the short e. Introduced the inflectional ending -ed added to present and past tense verbs.
We read interactive stories that were from the Genre of Informational Text (gives true information or facts). Genre: Fairy Tale ( A story that has made up characters and places).
As whole group we read the stories My Garden and My Oak Tree. We are identifying the setting, characters and sequence of events in the stories.
Students are reading their Wonders stories at school and small group readers at school. The take home readers are also being sent home every week for your child to read to you.
Math
Compare numbers up to 12 using: is less than, is equal to, is greater than, order numbers up to 12, identify and write numbers 13 through 31. We are learning our tens and ones. We played a game called, " I have ( name of number) who has ( name of number?"). The students really enjoyed playing this game. We also have been working hard on identifying the teen numbers. Another skill that we are working on is the number that comes before and the number that comes after and between. E.g: 2 is before 3, 7 is after 6, and 8 is between 7 and 9. We are practicing counting from 1- 20 and from 20 backwards to 1. This week and next we will practice counting from 1-31.
Social Studies
Special Notes
On Mon; Jan. 20th there will not be school for students as the teachers have Teacher In-Service.
Mrs. Froiland will be back on Wed; Jan. 29th.
I have enjoyed being with all of the students during this time.
