FEBRUARY & MARCH 2020 / FEBRERO Y MARZO 2020
Welcome to February / Bienvenidos al Febrero
Hello Hillcrest Families!
Welcome to February! While the shortest month of the year, it is a very busy and significant month in schools for many reasons. We celebrate several holidays, both official and unofficial, and it marks the beginning of our second half of the school year, where students gain momentum and can make significant gains in their learning.
February is commonly known as the month of Valentine’s Day, and here in the Peekskill City School District, we honor this through our monthly Commitment 2 Character theme, which this month, is “love.” We focus this month on expanding students’ understanding of the many facets of love, including love of family, love of community, love of school, love for one another, and love for one’s self. At Hillcrest, we will also be launching our first Family Book Read experience, for families to share a short picture book together to explore the themes of kindness and love.
It is also Back History Month, and while we take special care this month to honor our shared past and celebrate the accomplishments and lives of black heroes, we strive to do this in our daily work across the year with our children. Black history is our history, and black heroes are our heroes, and children should not see that it is only for this one short month that we honor the people who came before us and who have struggled and persisted to make the ideals of our country more and more of a reality, and those who continue to work to move us further in that journey. While many of the heroes of black history that we discuss and highlight during this month and across the year are black, there are also heroes of all races and ethnicities who have made (and continue to make) significant contributions in terms of black history in our nation whom we may also learn about and celebrate. Peekskill has had a special role in local black history for many reasons, only one of which was serving has a safe haven along the underground railroad for escaped enslaved blacks who bravely sought a better life. Here in Peekskill, we have the wonderful gift of living in a diverse community, and so we have an incredible opportunity to explore our shared experience, and to educate the more recent arrivals to our country -- who have also come to our city in search of a better life --about the unique struggle our country has experienced, and how they can play a part and contribute towards realizing the America of our ideals. Because as I stated above, black history is our history, and we all are called upon to play a part in its unfolding and progression towards fulfillment of our shared, American ideals of equality, freedom, and justice.
We also celebrate Presidents’ Day this month, which was originally a holiday to commemorate the birthday anniversaries of two of our most famous presidents, George Washington (February 22, 1732) and Abraham Lincoln (February 12, 1809). Both of these giants of American history have unique connections to our fair City, as both have visited here and influenced the evolution of Peekskill. Washington passed through Peeksill many times, sometimes accompanied by his troops as they traversed the areas fighting the oppression of the British forces who resisted American independence. He often stayed at the Birdsall House, which was located across main street from the restaurant that currently carries that name, and it was there that he gave Benedict Arnold command of West Point in 1780. A marker stands there next to Kathleen’s Tea Room to mark the site of the tavern that once was Washington’s unofficial headquarters here in Peekskill. The tavern stood on that site until the mid-1800s, when it was taken down because it partly obstructed the straight line of main street as Peeksill grew into a small city. Abraham Lincoln’s visit to Peekskill is commemorated near the waterfront where the train he was riding on passed through Peekskill, and where he stopped to deliver a speech to our curious and supportive citizens in 1861 (On FEBRUARY 19th, no less!). The Lincoln Depot Museum now stands at the site to remind us of this visit, and to educate Peeksill’s citizens about Lincoln’s influence of our city. At this time of year, we acknowledge the contributions of these important presidents, but the holiday has come to include the contributions of all of the individuals who have held the office of president of our country.
Presidents’ Day also marks the start of our mid-winter break (February 17 - 21), when schools will be closed.
Another landmark day in February which is not a national holiday or even well-known outside of schools is the 100th Day of School. Barring any unforeseen snow days, the 100th Day of School will be on February 27th this school year. On that day, we take a moment to acknowledge the hard work and celebrate the learning of our students, and to explore the unique qualities of the number 100 in our base ten number system. Teachers look for opportunities to take advantage of the special day to plan engaging learning activities for our students.
With February’s arrival, we typically also see a rise on cases of winter illnesses such as the flu. Please remind students to wash their hands frequently, and to take other precautions to avoid spreading germs such as covering coughs and sneezes, and to avoid sharing drinks and eating utensils. If your child is diagnosed with the flu, please report it when you call to report it to the main office so we can track cases and take extra cleaning precautions to ensure the good health of our students and staff. See the brief article in the newsletter for more information.
Students may need some extra support from you at home during this month; academics continue to ramp up as we approach state assessments in March and April, and weather often prevents us from having outdoor recess. Students will need our patience and encouragement.
As I mentioned, February is the shortest month, which is made ever shorter for us here in school by the mid-winter break. This makes attendance even more important in order to make sure students have consistent learning experiences. It also provides students with a special opportunity to earn monthly perfect attendance acknowledgement because it really only translates to attending 15 days! Help us accomplish this goal by sending your child to school every day on time whenever they are physically able to do so. Every day counts -- in the month of February and all year long! Consistent school attendance is directly related to student success, and every child deserves that!
Thank you for your continued partnership with us in support of our children; if there is anything we can do to assist, please do not hesitate to reach out to the school, and we will connect you with the person most equipped to help you with your concern or request!
Yours,
Randy Lichtenwalner

¡Hola Familias de Hillcrest!
¡Bienvenidos a Febrero!
Suyo,
Randy Lichtenwalner

IMPORTANT NEWS / NOTICIAS IMPORTANTES
Family Book Read / Libro de Lectura Familiar
This new project is a fun way for students and families to share a book together and discuss themes related to our school values and goals. This year we will be sending two different books home with our students as part of the Family Book Reads Program. The books selected for this program are picture books that can be shared and enjoyed by younger siblings and adults alike, and are meant to provoke conversation as they discuss the book, answer questions together, and engage in activities to explore the themes and lessons of the story. Picture books are also shorter than most 4th or 5th grade level books, so it should be able to be completed by your family in one or two sittings. Children’s picture books can sometimes seem simple, but the ideas and themes they explore can be thought-provoking for children and adults of all ages, so please include as many member of your family as possible: younger brothers and sisters, parents, cousins, aunts, uncles, grandparents -- or even friends, neighbors -- anyone that you consider “family.”
The first book in this program is “Somebody Loves You, Mr. Hatch” and will arrive in your home in the coming days. This book is the perfect book to enjoy together around Valentine’s Day, and during the month of February when we, as a school district, celebrate our monthly Commitment to Character theme: love. This is a homework assignment that is meant to be completed by students with their families. We hope that you will enjoy this opportunity to spend some quality time with your Hillcrest student and other members of your family as you share a story together and explore ways to express love and kindness to others.

STATE ASSESSMENTS COMING UP IN MARCH AND APRIL/ LAS EVALUACIONES ESTATALES VIENEN EN MARZO Y ABRIL
Spring is State Assessment season, and students at Hillcrest will be celebrating their learning by showing the world how much they have learned and how they have grown as readers, writers, mathematicians, scientists and as learners of English. Please see the schedule below for the upcoming state assessments, and mark your family calendars. While there is no special studying or practicing required, we ask parents to help prepare their students by ensuring they get a good night’s sleep before each assessment date, eat a good breakfast each morning of the assessments, and come to school on time and “ready to rock” the assessment! Each day your children work hard and amaze us with their talents and growing knowledge, and we look forward to this opportunity for them to celebrate their learning with others. In recent years, the state has listened to feedback from parents and educators and have made changes to the assessments, making them shorter in length as well as in the number of days (2 days each for ELA and Math, instead of 3 days each), and eliminating the time limit, so that students can work at their own pace and do their very best work. While the results of the assessments do not impact a student’s report card, the results help us as a school to evaluate our curriculum and pedagogy so we can continually refine our ability to help students meet New York State grade level standards. If you can help us by encouraging your student to get the proper rest, eat a healthy breakfast, and do their best work, we would appreciate your support!
IMPORTANT ASSESSMENT DATES:
March 25 & 26, 2020: 3rd, 4th, & 5th grade English Language Arts (ELA) Reading and Writing Assessment
April 21 & 22, 2020: 3rd, 4th & 5th grade Mathematics Assessment
New York State English as a Second Language Achievement Test (NYSESLAT) is an assessment given annually to students who are English Language Learners until they reach proficiency. It is administered in several parts, and is administered individually or on small groups, so the dates for each student varies, but fit within the following date ranges:
April 6 - May 16, 2020: NYSESLAT Speaking
May 4 - 15, 2020 NYSESLAT Listening, Reading & Writing
May 18 - 29, 2020: 4th Grade Science Assessment (performance component)
June 1 4th Grade Science Assessment (written assessment)

4th GRADERS TO LEARN HOW BEAVERS BUILT THE HUDSON VALLEY / LOS ESTUDIANTES DE 4to GRADO VAN A APRENDER CÓMO LOS CASTORES CONSTRUYERON EL VALLE DE HUDSON
4th graders will be treated to a special program related to their social studies and science curriculum March 3-6 when presenters come to Hillcrest to deliver a program called How Beavers Built the Hudson Valley. Students will learn how the ingenious beaver played an important role in the economic, cultural and ecological development of the Hudson Valley that can still be seen today. The presenters will show the students real beaver’s fur and skulls to introduce what made its pelt so valuable. They will examine chew patterns to understand the beaver’s unique ability to alter its environment. Then through a detailed and hands-on presentation, they will examine the beaver’s place in the Hudson River’s ecology; how the beaver trade influenced the relationship between the colonists and the Native Americans; the impact of the beaver trade on local tribes, why the beaver is on the official seal of New York City; the impact of their decline on the 18th century economy as well as the environment of the Valley, and how their return has had both positive and negative impacts for residents of the Hudson Valley. We will also consider how this unique little animal had a major impact on the founding and development of our fair City of Peekskill.

Together with artists and community members in Peekskill, students will make a fabric patch that will fill a piece of a collective Unity Quilt. The finished product will be on display in Hudson Valley MOCA’s galleries as well as locations around Peekskill!
SOCIAL MEDIA AND ONLINE GAMING / MEDIOS SOCIALES Y JUEGOS EN LÍNEA
More and more of our students are getting involved in social media and interactive gaming, using phone and computer apps like SnapChat, Instagram, Facebook, Houseparty, WhatsApp, Twitter, Musicly, etc. Children with game systems like XBox, Wii, Playstation, etc. often play games like Roadblocks, Fortnite, Apex, Minecraft, etc. where they can interact online with other players, some of whom they may or may not know.
Most of these apps and games have minimum ages of 13 or 14 for legitimate reasons: many children of our students’ ages do not have the maturity and experience to make good choices online. We are seeing this manifest itself at school, where students have had negative experiences online with peers on social media, where their peers are emboldened by the fact that they are in the privacy of their living room and not looking at their peer in the eye, and use unkind words or make inappropriate comments that they would typically not make in person. Some students are posting photos that do not reflect them at that their best, and some students post comments on those photos that are not true to their own true personalities. Parents are encouraged to become aware of their child’s online presence, and approve and monitor the apps and games they engage in while they use their phones, computers, and game stations. In order to sign up for many of these social media apps, students have to register and enter their birthdate; if their birthdate does not meet the app’s minimum age requirement, they will be denied access. However, many children simply change the birthdate they enter so that it reflects an age that is acceptable, and they easily gain access to an app or game that has been rated for older, more mature audiences. Once they gain access, others assume they are older, and treat them as such. Children are often exposed to things that parents would otherwise protect them from, without the parent’s knowledge. We encourage parents to monitor their children’s social media presence, and to follow and enforce the minimum age guidelines that the developers have set. This is for the safety and well-being of the child, but also for the protection of the parent, who is the legal owner of the device being used so that they are not held legally liable for any mistakes their child may make as they learn how to navigate the world of social media and online gaming. If you are concerned about your child’s access to apps and games online, you may want to look into parental controls that allow you to approve apps being installed. Some include NetNanny, ScreentimeLabs, DinnerTime, and others.
