April 2018
A Note From Principal Miller
Dear CE Families,
Although the calendar says Spring has arrived, it sure doesn't feel like it. With the hope of warmer temperatures in the future, be sure to keep outdoor play a part of your family routine. Kids need the down time play offers. In addition, play time with peers allow students to problem solve, be creative and strengthen social skills. Equally important as play is getting enough sleep. Balancing the two is often a challenge but I know you can do it. As we transition into Spring, use the recess (April 2nd - 9th) to revisit schedules and keep in mind the following events:
- April 6th & 7th: PTO Yard Sale
- April 10th: PTO Meeting: We will be discussing May events and the CE Special Guest Dance for our Girls.
- April 11th-13th: NYS ELA Assessments for students in Grades 3-8
- April 19th: Parent Community Forum on Mental Health Issues @ 6:30 p.m., HS Auditorium
- April 20th: Annual Art Show and Ice Cream Social, 6-7pm
- April 26th & 27th: Kindergarten Screening
**May 2nd-4th: NYS Math Assessments for students in Grades 3-8
Read on for more details on these events. Spring has Sprung!

It was a Who’s Who of people from history!
It was a Who’s Who of people from history! CE’s second Wax Museum was held on March 27, 2018. Each third grader chose the biography of a famous person from history, from Ben Franklin to Princess Diana. Students then read to learn more about why their person was famous and learned about important contributions to the world. Timelines and poems were created in class, and at home students created poster displays and crafted costumes and artifacts. The students had to ‘come alive’ when they were approached by an audience member, and they did an amazing job explaining why these historical figures were important. Great fun was had by all!

TREX Co. - Partners in Plastic
Plastic is very much a part of our human world. Conscientious humans dispose of their plastic in responsible ways, whenever possible. Unfortunately, some humans don’t. When this happens, plastic ends up in our natural world……our oceans, our rivers, and our environment.
When plastic bags no longer have a purpose for us, what happens to them? Most people would say that they either go into the garbage or into the recycling bin. Plastic bag recycling is one of the most important ways to rid plastic bags and plastic wrappings from our environment. The TREX Company offered a challenge to schools to see just how many plastic bags and wrappings could be collected from September through mid-April. Coxsackie Elementary has once again joined this challenge for the fourth year. At this point in the contest, we have collected more than 1,300 pounds of plastic bags and wrappings!!! AMAZING!!!!! Some students began thinking about what would happen with the plastic bags and wrappings after the TREX challenge was over for the year. WELL………..there is a solution! Our local grocery store, Tops, has been the location to drop off our collected plastic for the Trex challenge. Happily, Tops will continue to collect plastic bags and wrappings long term. So, being a strong recycling community, Coxsackie Elementary students have decided to continue to collect the plastic bags and wrappings year round! We want to keep our world clean, not just during a plastic bag collecting contest, but every day! So, keep bringing in your plastic bags and wrappings to school for recycling, and help keep our environment a little cleaner!
THING TO REMEMBER:
- TREX Plastic Bag/Wrappings Contest Ends Wednesday, April 18th!
- We are currently in SECOND place for the TREX contest so far!
- To get our BIGGEST total for the contest, bring in all that you can by Wednesday, April 18th.
- Coxsackie Elementary will continue to collect plastic bags and wrappings all year long to reach our personal best, as a school who cares about a cleaner place for you and me. Can we beat last year’s total???
Please help us buy a goat, a sheep, or maybe some ducks!
The 4th Grade Community Service Program will be collecting money between April 9th - 27th to buy an animal (or animals) for Heifer International. Heifer International (https://www.heifer.org/) works with communities to create income, empower women, care for the Earth, and ultimately end world hunger and poverty. Please send in $1 (or more) to help us help others in need.
The money we donate can:
- Improve nutrition and allow children to live healthier lives.
- Allow families to afford food, school fees, and medicine for their children.
- Provide goats, cows, and other animals with training to families struggling with hunger.
- Bring a family dignity and self-reliance.
Come One, Come All!! CE's 3rd Annual Indoor Yard Sale - Friday, 4/6 & Saturday, 4/7
As you rummage through those closets filled with items long forgotten consider donating them to our Annual Indoor School Yard sale being held Friday and Saturday, April 6th and 7th from 9 a.m. - 2 p.m. in the CE cafeteria (Friday evening hours from 6 - 8 p.m.). We are looking for any item that still has some life or use to it. Your donations are tax deductible.
We will be accepting items starting Monday, March 26th. Email me to arrange large item donations, these can be dropped off during spring break. Please only donate items in good, working condition; items you yourself would find purchase worthy at a yard sale. For those of you that itemize, be sure to ask for a donation slip to keep for your 2018 tax records. Thanks! Email: coxsackieelementarypto@yahoo.com
Many Thanks from A.C.E.!
Thank you so much to all the individuals who made ACE possible this year! From teaching classes, to volunteering your time, space and/or materials...all your efforts are very much appreciated. We ended up having 99 participants and somehow managed to keep the mayhem under control and the kiddos engaged. Our student population benefited from trying something new or honing a cherished skill in an enthusiastic and engaging environment. None of this would have been possible without you. Thank you for keeping this immeasurably worthwhile program alive!
