Remote Learning Skaggs
April 27 - May 1, 2020
Note from the Principals
As the announcement of school closing for the remainder of the school year affects us all, I too am grappling with the reality of it particularly more this week. However, I am optimistic as teachers, PTA, and everyone that loves our Stars are coming up with ideas to make the end of this school year special. On our agenda so far are our fifth grade students (graduation, party...), end of the year celebrations, and all that apply to ending this school year strong. We will keep you posted, so help us keep our Stars motivated and stay connected! We thank you so much for your continued commitment to remote learning! We appreciate all of your efforts and know that it's not easy!
Additionally, as we make plans on end-of-year procedures on Chromebooks, library books, materials left at school, spring pictures, yearbooks, and etc., that too, will be shared with you.

2020-2021 School Year
Classroom Assignment
While we realize that this spring semester has been anything but typical, we also recognize that now is the time of year when parents begin to think about teacher assignments for the 2020-2021 school year.
Assigning students to classrooms is a very detailed and time-intensive process for all of our teachers. Each grade level spends countless hours during the spring and summer months, looking at each child individually as they place him/her in a class for the following year. Many factors are considered during this process, including student learning styles, teaching styles, personalities, amount of structure needed, emotional needs, etc. I share this information with the hope that this deeper understanding allows you to have trust in this process. You can be assured that we will be extremely diligent in carefully considering every student's needs and learning style as we form classes for the 2020-2021 school year.
In the event that you desire to share a special request with me regarding the teacher with whom your child is placed next year, please know that we will not accept requests that include a specific teacher name. Instead, please submit (in writing) information about the type of teacher who you feel would be the best match for your child. However, please know that I am not asking you to write me letter.
If you choose to submit teacher characteristics, I need to receive your written information no later than Friday, May 1, 2020 in order for it to be utilized as we begin the 2020-2021 class formation process. For your convenience, any written information can be emailed to me at karen.lee@pisd.edu.
We want to know who is returning to Skaggs next year.

Grading
During our Remote Learning Plan for School Closure the goal for grading is to monitor progress of student learning in order to provide feedback, tailor support and design instruction that maintains educational continuity.
The extended emergency closures caused by COVID-19 are unprecedented for area school districts. There has been extensive discussion and collaboration about how to handle grades during remote learning. As a district, keeping students at the heart of our decisions, these guiding principles were used in the development. Priority is placed on:
- Students’ social and emotional well-being
- Students’ opportunity to continue learning (equity and access)
- Student success (mastery approach)
- Valuing student work and teacher expertise
Our plan is designed to relieve student stress and encourage participation as we help students master the remaining curriculum content with meaningful teacher feedback.
Our goal is grace > grades.
View and download the Grading Guidelines for Remote Learning.
Clarification: Art, Music and PE classes are not graded, however, they are essential to a child’s well being and contribute to strong social emotional health, especially in times of stress.
