Child Abuse Soundtrack

Alyssa Lies - Music Video - Jason Michael Carrol

"Alyssa Lies" by Jason Michael Carrol (2007)

Fact:

Approximately 5 children die every day because of child abuse.

Why I Chose This Song:

This song has always been an important song on my own personal playlist and was one of my top picks when I decided my topic. This song tells the story of a little girl making friends with a girl named Alyssa at school. Alyssa is abused in her home-life, but when she is questioned about it, she lies. This is common in many cases in young children, whether they are told to lie or because they are scared.

Martina McBride - Concrete Angel

"Concrete Angel" by Martina McBride (2008)

Fact:

In the United States, more than 4 children die from child abuse and neglect on a daily basis. Over 70% of these children are below the age of 3.

Why I Chose This Song:

This was one of my other top picks when deciding my topic, as well as being on my personal playlist. Martina McBride is the bomb.com and has a fantastic voice. She is one of my favorite artists. This song is another song that focuses the story at a school setting. I, personally, think learning about school settings with situations like this is very important in resolving the situation and settling it before it escalates. The story tells how this girl, through everything she has been through, "stands hard as a stone in a world that she cant rise above, but her dreams give her wings and she flies to a place where she's loved, concrete angel."

Broken Girl by Matthew West with lyrics

"Broken Girl" by Matthew West (2010)

Fact:

90% of child sexual abuse victims know the perpetrator in some way. 68% are abused by a family member.

Why I Chose This Song:

This song is about any girl who was abused. He is explaining that she does not have to stay the broken girl. He is asking them to lay it all down to the Lord and you will be amazed how he can put a broken girl back together.

I'm Ok - Christina Aguilera

"I'm Ok" by Christina Aguilera (2002)

Fact:

About 80% of 21-year-olds who were abused as children met criteria for at least one psychological disorder.

Why I Chose This Song:

I chose this song because Christina Aguilera explains how the bruising goes away but the memories will always haunt her. Abuse can physically and mentally scar people for their entire life. Many times, they will need therapy of some sort. She states that even though she remembers it, she is okay.

Runaway love - Ludacris feat. Mary J. Blige *Lyrics*

"Runaway Love" by Ludacris ft. Mary J Blige (2006)

Fact:

1 out of 3 girls and 1 out of 5 boys will be sexually abused before they reach age 18.

Why I Chose This Song:

This song is a little vulgar in some of the stories, but the song tells multiple different abuse stories of all ages. it gives you an idea of the different types of abuse and the different ages. I chose this song because I feel like everyone labels 'abuse' as a certain age or just 'sexual abuse', etc.

Suzanne Vega - Luka

"Luka" by Suzanne Vega (1987)

Fact:

Every year more than 3 million reports of child abuse are made in the United States involving more than 6 million children (a report can include multiple children).

Why I Chose This Song:

This song tells the story of a child covering his abuse with lies when people ask about it. He asks you not to ask about the arguing, but then goes on to tell you how 'they' go on to hit you (him) until you cry. This song is an older song that I've known most of my life, and let me tell you, this song can make you cry! But again, I listed this song, because it gives an excellent example of both the actual idea of abuse, and how the child reacts.

Beth Hart ~~ Leave the light on ~~ Lyrics

"Leave the Light On" by Beth Hart (2003)

Fact:

Individuals who reported six or more adverse childhood experiences had an average life expectancy two decades shorter than those who reported none.

Why I Chose This Song:

I chose this song because it portrays the idea that abuse can ruin your life. It doesn't necessarily have to, or will in every case, but in most cases it will. She told herself she wouldn't become that person after everything she went through, but she did. All she wanted was to live and love, because she never did. And this is true in some stories, and it's sad!
