National History Day 2017

The 2016-2017 year will be filled with research related to the theme Taking a Stand in History. The theme is broad to encourage participants to delve into history, whether it be a topic from the ancient world or the history of their own city.

Literacy Tip: #Hashtags

Checking for student comprehension of text can be as simple (and yet quite complex) as asking students to create hashtags(#). Consider this example:

Ms. Kirchhof's World History class is going to read a brief article on the causes for the decline of the Roman Empire. Before her students begin to read, she tells her students that they will create hashtags for the following tweet using the information in the reading. The hashtags should help the people reading the tweet understand what caused the Roman Empire to fall. One hashtag has been included as an example: #HunsRGonnaGetcha refers to the Germanic invasions of the empire.
