NEW: A Welcome Back Message from Mr. Smith
Northwest High School Families,
Happy New Year! I hope this message finds everyone rested, rejuvenated and ready for 2022! It is a new year and I am thrilled to be welcoming you back to school. This week is a full, regular bell schedule week at NWHS. There are only a few short weeks until the semester ends on Friday, January 21. Please check out this week's newsletter with important news to kick off the calendar year!
To begin, and in case you missed it, MCPS provided updated guidance as we return to in-person learning tomorrow, Monday, January 3. You can read MCPS' guidance linked here. Additionally, I have included it as one of the "new" items below.
At NWHS, we continue to highlight the importance of being safe and practicing mitigation tactics to slow the spread of COVID-19. The following are reminders of actions currently in progress:
Suspension of all Afterschool Non-Athletics Extracurricular Activities:
All in-person, non-athletic extracurricular activities outside the school day are suspended from Monday, Dec. 20, through Friday, Jan. 7. Community use of school buildings, including daycare programs, can continue as scheduled.
Athletic practices and games can continue as scheduled, as a result of the vaccination requirement for winter sports student-athletes . All games during Winter Break (December 23-January 2) are cancelled; optional practices are allowed. Beginning Monday, Dec. 20, if a team has three or more active positive COVID-19 cases, all team activities must be paused for 14 days. For athletic competitions, all spectators must continue to wear masks at all times.
One of the best ways we can keep all students and staff safe is through random COVID-19 screening testing in schools. This currently occurs in all 209 schools, and we will increase the amount of COVID-19 screening testing in January. It is important for parents/guardians to give permission for their students to participate in the COVID-19 screening program.
In cases where DHHS identifies an outbreak, as defined by the Maryland Department of Health, and there is concern about increased spread of COVID-19 in a school, reduced quarantine options may not be used for unvaccinated close contacts.
Daily Reminders:
On a daily basis, announcements/reminders are made regarding the importance of adhering to the best mitigation practices (proper mask wearing, constant hand-washing, sanitizing, staying home when sick and getting tested for COVID-19) to slow the spread.
As noted in the MCPS message, schools will be providing at-home rapid test kits for all students and staff in the next two weeks. All families will be asked to administer the tests to their children and then report any positive test results. Staff members will receive KN-95 masks. MCPS will continue to use the same quarantine guidelines announced in November until further guidance is provided from the Maryland Department of Health. Individuals who test positive will need to continue to isolate for 10 days from the onset of symptoms or 10 days from the date of the positive test for asymptomatic cases.
In this week's newsletter, there are some important updates from MCPS regarding our return from Winter Break, this week's college and career information, a thank you from Northwest GIves Back, a change to our Ulysses fair dates, this week's athletics schedule and an upcoming PTSA fundraiser. There are also some important reminders including a way to say thank you to staff, updates for our 10th graders regarding being STEM ready, a student competition opportunity and a few other items.
As always, we thank you for your continued support and trust. Let's make it a great start to 2022!
NEW: MCPS Message regarding the Return from Winter Break
Dear MCPS Community,
Happy New Year! We hope you enjoyed winter break, and we are excited to welcome our students back tomorrow for in-person learning. In preparation, we want to share how we will communicate with you in the coming weeks, as we seek to preserve the in-person learning experience while confronting a rise in COVID-19 cases.
Inclement Weather
The weather for Jan. 3 forecasts rain turning to a mix of ice and snow by early Monday. We will monitor the weather and conditions of roads and sidewalks throughout the night and make a determination about delay or closure as necessary. Those notifications are typically communicated by 5 a.m.
Reporting Positive Cases
If any student or staff member tests positive for COVID-19, please report it to MCPS using this form. This is the same process used during winter break to collect information on students or staff members who tested positive. Beginning Monday, Jan. 3, you may also call your school if you are not able to submit the information electronically.
Data Reporting
Through 10 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 1, there have been 3,686 positive cases reported among students and staff in MCPS during winter break. The number of cases in the school system over the last several weeks has increased significantly in line with trends across Maryland and the United States. As shared in our Dec. 30 community update, we are taking a number of measures to keep students and staff safe.
You can view the number of positive cases over winter break at each school at this link.
Schools will not send community letters regarding cases reported during winter break. Beginning Monday, Jan. 3, a list of the number of positive cases reported at each school site that day will be reported at the top of the COVID-19 Dashboard website by 7 p.m. each school day. The dashboard will continue to report data on total positive cases and quarantines on a weekly basis.
Community Updates
To keep families updated, throughout January, all members of the MCPS community will receive community update emails on Thursday afternoons, with the most up-to-date information regarding COVID-19 and the steps we are taking to keep students, staff, families and community members safe.
Individual School Transitions to Virtual Learning
We are continuing to monitor cases on a daily basis. As shared previously, if 5% or more of unrelated students/teachers/staff members (minimum of 10 individuals) tests positive in a 14-day period, MCPS central office staff and the Montgomery County Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) will work together to determine if students in the school should transition to virtual learning for 14 calendar days. Please note that the 5% threshold does not automatically result in school closure; the primary factor to consider will be the level of virus spread in the school.
Parents and guardians will be notified if a decision is made to transition to virtual learning. Currently, no school has reached the 5% threshold, so all schools are scheduled to open as planned tomorrow, Monday, Jan. 3.
Important Reminders
- Keep children home if they have any symptoms of illness and get them tested for COVID-19.
It’s important that students don't spread their illness to others. Please keep them home when they are sick and have them tested for COVID-19 as an extra precaution. - Say Yes to the Test.
Parents must give their permission for in-school testing. They can do so by completing this form. For more details, please visit our "Say Yes to the Test" website.
Athletics
Important information providing guidance for athletes and spectators about game schedules, masking, overnight travel and more are provided in the Return to R.A.I.S.E. athletics update that can be reviewed at this link.
Thank you for your support as we prepare for the first day of school in 2022.

ASVAB testing for career exploration is coming to Northwest! Wednesday, February 16 @ 7:45 am. Parent/Guardian permission is required.
The Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery is an aptitude test that covers eight areas, which are related to different careers. An aptitude indicates your readiness to become proficient in a certain type of activity. The eight areas of the test include: General Science, Arithmetic Reasoning, Word Knowledge, Paragraph Comprehension, Mathematic Knowledge, Electronic Information, Auto and Shop Information, and Mechanical Comprehension. Students will receive a Career Exploration Guide when their test results are returned to them. This guide includes an interest inventory that will help students use their interests and ASVAB scores to explore both civilian and military occupations.
ASVAB participants are not under any obligation to the Military as a result of taking the ASVAB. But a senior can use their scores from the ASVAB to enlist in the Military after graduation. The scores are good for two years. Many students take the ASVAB for career exploration and have no interest in military occupations.
Parent permission is required. Submission of the ASVAB Career Exploration Parent Permission form will act as parent signature.
To prepare for the ASVAB visit ASVAB Career Exploration Program at https://www.asvabprogram.com/student.

REMINDER: MCPS Community Update regarding Athletics/Non-Athletic Activities
Dear MCPS Community,
Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, much has been asked of our students and staff. As an institution, we are grateful for all you have done in the face of this pandemic. Due to the efforts of everyone in our community, we have been able to return to in-person learning five days a week.
Still, the risk remains high. COVID-19 cases are on the rise in Montgomery County and are also increasing in many areas of the country. While our student case rate is lower than most other school systems in Maryland, we have witnessed rising numbers of COVID-19 positive cases among MCPS students and staff in recent weeks.
MCPS continues to collaborate closely with the Montgomery County Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) to ensure the safety of all students and staff in MCPS schools and facilities. Based on updated guidance from DHHS, the following measures will be implemented:
MCPS will continue to work closely with DHHS to monitor positive cases, and an additional community update will be sent prior to Winter Break. If cases continue to rise, DHHS will update its guidance to MCPS to incorporate additional mitigation measures. As has been the case throughout the school year, MCPS will only close schools and shift to virtual instruction if required to do so by local and/or state government officials.
We must all remain vigilant! If you suspect that you have been exposed or are experiencing COVID-19 symptoms, please get a COVID-19 test and stay home until you receive the results. This is a critical piece of the prevention puzzle, but testing alone is not sufficient to keep the pandemic at bay.
Here is what you can do:
Get the shot. The COVID-19 vaccine is safe and available for everyone aged 5 and older.
Get the booster shot if you’re eligible for one. The booster shot to ensure you are sufficiently protected is now available for everyone 16 and above.
Wear a face covering over your nose and mouth whenever you are in an MCPS building or in public buildings.
Wash your hands frequently before and after eating or touching your eyes, nose or mouth.
Say Yes to the Test. Give permission for the random and rapid COVID-19 screening programs in MCPS schools. This is critical to identifying cases and reducing the number of students in quarantine.
Socialize outdoors. If you meet with others indoors, avoid crowded, poorly ventilated spaces. See more recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Planning to travel? Know what the CDC has to say about how to do that safely. Many of us are experiencing pandemic fatigue. It has been a long road. But it is crucial that we continue practicing the preventive behaviors that have helped to keep our community safe.

REMINDER: STEM Ready for 2022-2023 (for 10th grade students)
Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS), in partnership with Montgomery College, University of Maryland, Baltimore County, and the Universities at Shady Grove is excited to launch the STEM Ready program, which will provide a supportive path to a four-year college degree and is being offered for the first time to current Grade 10 students.
The STEM Ready program will empower students who are traditionally underrepresented in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) to achieve an undergraduate degree in Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering or Applied Biotechnology. Students can apply to the program during their sophomore year of high school and continue it as they move on to Montgomery College and then UMBC at the Universities at Shady Grove. Students will graduate well-prepared to be part of the regional STEM workforce.
In addition to a pathway to a STEM degree, students will have early access to college courses, get career coaching and professional skills training, engage in hands-on learning and have the opportunity to earn industry credentials. Interested Grade 10 students should complete this interest form to be considered. Those who are eligible will receive a separate
communication with application information and they can register for an information session at shadygrove.umbc.edu/stem-ready When applications exceed the number of available seats, a lottery will be conducted.
Grade 10 students can indicate interest in the program by completing this link (https://bit.ly/stem_ready). Interest Forms should be completed by Monday, January 3, 2022. Students can only complete the interest form while signed into their MCPS Google account.
