Student Spotlight - Making a Difference at Marsh Jr.

My name is Kyren Le'Sean Conn-Gaston. I'm a 6 grader at Marsh Jr High School. I have created a new program called Campus Clean. I am so excited to get it out to the school. Campus Clean is basically a way to inspire students at MJHS to pick up trash. So how Campus Clean works is any student after school from 2:45 - 3:15 on Monday, Wednesday, Friday can bring in three pieces of trash and can receive three pieces of candy. I really believe this will help keep the campus clean. I am so excited

We are Going to Be Friends

Check out this inspirational video from the Marsh Chorus. Great job Austin Kin and our amazing Gators!!

Did you know that Marsh is an AVID School site?

What is AVID?

Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) is an in-school academic support program for grades seven through twelve. The purpose of the program is to prepare students for college eligibility and success.

AVID Elective

The core component is the AVID Elective, which supports students as they tackle the most rigorous classes. For one period a day, AVID students learn: organizational and study skills, work on critical thinking and asking probing questions, get academic help from peers and college tutors, and participate in enrichment and motivational activities that make college seem attainable.

Furthermore, AVID students become academically successful leaders and role models for other students.

AVID Schoolwide

The AVID instructional program focuses on methodologies that will help students prepare for - and participate in - a rigorous college-preparatory curriculum. These methodologies are referred to as WICOR:

W - Writing. Students clarify and communicate their thoughts and understanding of material.

I - Inquiry. Students ask questions which allow them to clarify, analyze, and synthesize material.

C - Collaboration. Students challenge, help, and learn from one another.

O - Organization. Students learn how to organize, retrieve and maintain their materials and data.

R - Reading. Students analyze, question, critique, clarify, and comprehend material.

All of our Marsh Teachers have been trained in AVID WICOR instructional strategies and implement this methodology in the core class setting.

Take a moment to check out more about AVID on our Marsh Website.

AVID WICOR Spotlight

This week's AVID WICOR Spotlight is Mrs. Blaschke and Ms. Rosander English class. This teaching team had students develop a deeper understanding of the themes in their class novel The Watsons go to Burlingame by doing a collaborative activity called "Get One Give One". This form of a Gallery Walk allows students to share their own thoughts about the theme and then take an idea from the chart regarding the theme. By the time they complete the activity they have shared and seen all of the class ideas on how they related to that theme in the novel. In this activity students Way to go Mrs. Blaschke and Ms. Roseander's English class, you are WICOR all-stars!!

Classroom Spotlight

This week's classroom spotlight is on Mrs. Anderson and Ms. Wilcox's math class. This week students have been learning about ratios. Students were able to record and highlight their new vocabulary in their Math Notebooks. These can later be accessed for their upcoming math tests. In addition students practiced ratios as a collaborative group through solving equations on a jamboard that they later presented to the whole class. Following this as a whole class they solved the same ratio problem using visuals prior to having to solve ratios on their own. Way to incorporate AVID's WICOR strategies of collaboration and notetaking to help support student learning. Way to go Gators, we are so proud of all you are learning!
