Keeping Up with Comm Arts
~ July 25, 2022 ~
Hello Comm Arts Family and Friends!
AP Boot Camp was a success! We had 80 freshmen attend. Having some of our teachers and students back in the building was fantastic. It will be great to have everyone back on campus soon.
Over the summer, CAHS gained two new team members. Mrs. Sonya Lee is our new principal's secretary/bookkeeper, and Ms. Bettina Melton is our new US History AP/Dual Credit teacher. We are blessed to have them with us.

Broadcast Journalism
Rising Senior Flora Farr was selected for the Student Press Law Center (SPLC) New Voices Student Leaders Institute. Only three students from each state were selected. It is a free online program for students to improve their leadership and organizing skills, develop their role as leaders within the New Voices movement, and identify a strategy that could be instrumental in your state’s New Voices efforts. Participants in the all-online program will be joined by SPLC staff, New Voices leaders, and special guests to learn their unique capacity as organizers, deepen their understanding of civics, lobbying, and press freedom, and expand their ability to act as advocates. By the end of the Institute, Student Leaders will identify the pressing needs in their state and the unique ways in which students can respond, as well as possess the tools necessary to combat these challenges. Student leaders will also receive regular feedback and check-ins from New Voices advocates and SPLC staff, as well as bonus surprises throughout the school year. We are so proud to have Flora represent student journalists in our state.
Comm Arts Students Compete in National Leadership & Skills Conference
Two of our students competed in SkillsUSA at their annual National Leadership & Skills Conference (NLSC), in June. This is an opportunity for career and technical education students to showcase their skills.
2023 TMEA Invited Jazz Ensemble Winners
As a reward for this honor, TMEA will be giving us a 1-hour concert time slot at their annual convention hosted at the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center on the evening Friday, February 10. This concert will be attended by directors from across the state and nation, and is open to the public.

Dress Code Refresher
The District has adopted a standardized dress code for all students enrolled in Communications Arts High School. All students assigned to this campus will adhere to the standardized attire requirement which consists of:
Shorts and skorts are prohibited in grades six through twelve.
In grades, three through twelve, skirts, dresses, and culottes must be no more than four inches above the top of the kneecap. There should not be a cut or slit in the clothing that extends beyond the four-inch limit. These requirements also apply to school uniforms.
Appropriate footwear must be worn; footwear that has toes reinforced with steel, hard plastics, or similar materials is specifically prohibited.
Hair must be neat and clean. Unconventional colored, multi-colored or spiked, or Mohawk hairstyles are not permitted.
Headwear must not be worn in buildings.
Any clothes that are suggestive or indecent or which cause distraction are not acceptable. Specifically, oversized clothing, tank tops, muscle shirts, halter tops, spaghetti straps, exposed backs or midriffs, and see-through garments are not permitted.
Indecent/inappropriate patches, writings, or drawings on clothing are prohibited.
All pants are to be full length (Capri pants should be no less than four inches below the bottom of the kneecap) and worn at the waist (no "sagging" or "bagging"). Tight-fitting pants (e.g., tights, Spandex, bicycle pants) are also prohibited. Cut-offs and intentionally frayed pants are also prohibited.
Body piercing jewelry is prohibited except for rings, studs, or other traditional jewelry worn in the ear. Tongue rings and tongue studs are not permitted.

All AP Exams Have Benefits
Completing an AP course and exam means students took college-level coursework in high school. No matter the score, preparing for and taking an AP Exam sharpens students' skills to transition from high school to college. Research shows that students who take AP courses and exams have better college outcomes than their peers. Whatever the score, taking an AP Exam can keep students on track for college.
- Most students who score a 1 or 2 on their first AP Exam are likely to improve their score on a future exam.
- Students who achieve an exam score of 2 do significantly better in introductory college classes.
- Students who achieve exam scores of 1 or 2 are still more likely to attend college and graduate on time (than academically similar students who don’t take AP).
