THE FRIDAY FORECAST

THE WEEK OF SEPTEMBER 28 - OCTOBER 2, 2020

Walnut High School Holds Virtual Club Fair

This week, Walnut High School ASB held a virtual club fair for over 90 clubs! The Club Fair ran Tuesday through Thursday from 12:40 to 6:50pm and Friday from 11am until 5:50pm with each club holding 10-minute informational meetings on how to join and an overview of their club. We cannot stress this enough: Get Connected! GET Connected! GET CONNECTED!

Research shows that second only to family, school is the most important stabilizing force in the lives of young people. Students who experience school connectedness like school, feel that they belong, believe teachers care about them and their learning, believe that education matters, have friends at school, believe that discipline is fair, and have opportunities to participate in extracurricular activities.

Social Emotional Support for our Students

  • In 1997, 2004, and 2018, National studies found that school connectedness and family connection were the two most important factors predicting positive outcomes for students during their high school years.

  • It is critical that WHS, our students, and their families continue to improve our connection to each other.

  • At WHS we work to ensure that there are many layers of support that surround each student. Our goal is that if a student needs support, they are able to obtain support by choosing from several options.

  • The "Need Emotional Support" option on our webpage provides students a way to privately reach out and ask for support. Based on the student’s initial request, a staff member will reach out to first ensure their safety and well-being and then to listen. Often students need someone to listen as they process concerns they are having. Based on the issue, the responding staff member will assist the student to make connections to family members or other supportive WHS faculty who can help.

WALNUT HIGH SCHOOL & CAL POLY POMONA PARTNER UP TO DISCUSS IMPORTANT SOCIAL ISSUES

Walnut High School partnered up with Cal Poly Pomona Professor, Dr. Renford Reese, to conduct workshops on how to engage in productive dialogue when talking about racism, the dangers of labeling others, as well as understanding the context of situations rather than have knee-jerk reactions. This week we held 12 sessions with students and teachers to take a deep look at the divisiveness of our country and how we can come together as a community rather than continue to divide. The concept of "Ubuntu" was the central focus of the workshop meaning "the belief in a universal bond of sharing that connects all humanity." Below is a brief video overview of Dr. Reese's workshop.

ATTENDANCE COUNTS!

Please remember that attendance counts, every period, every day. Students will be marked absent if they are not on camera at the beginning of each period to verify their attendance.

If your student is having difficulty logging in, please contact your teacher immediately, and remember to clear their attendance by the end of the day.

Beginning Monday, all single period absences will need to be reconciled through the attendance office by the student. If marked absent, students will receive an email from the attendance office notifying them that they have been marked absent. The notification will include the date and period of the absence. The student will need to contact their teacher to make any necessary corrections to their individual period attendance. The teacher will then contact the attendance office to request the change. For full-day absences, please contact the attendance office by the end of the day.

We are so happy to see all of our students online and learning. They are working hard and making us proud. Keep up the great work!
